Geotechnical Engineer – BakerHicks
At BakerHicks, our Ground Engineering specialists play a vital role in delivering some of the UK’s most complex and high-impact infrastructure projects. As our portfolio continues to grow, we’re looking for a talented Geotechnical Engineer to join our dynamic team in Manchester.
Key Responsibilities
* Developing geotechnical design and specification packages from concept to completion
* Ground modelling and deriving characteristic geotechnical parameters
* Preparing desk studies, ground investigation specifications, and interpretive reports
* Designing shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, soil nails, and earthworks
* Tackling complex ground conditions such as soft soils, slope instability, mine workings, and marginal materials
* Supervising ground investigations and providing site support when required
* Collaborating with internal design teams and external stakeholders
* Representing BakerHicks in client meetings and technical discussions
* Ensuring compliance with current codes and standards including EC7, BS, CDM, and H&S regulations
Qualifications and Experience
* A degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Engineering Geology (or equivalent)
* Progress toward chartership (ICE, GeolSoc, IMMM); MSc or PhD is a plus
* A full UK driving licence
* Experience in a design consultancy environment
* Proven geotechnical design experience (foundations, retaining walls, earthworks, slope stability, etc.)
* Solid understanding of UK ground conditions and investigation practices
* Proficiency in geotechnical design software (GEO5 experience desirable)
* Strong technical writing and communication skills
* A collaborative, solution-oriented mindset
* PTS certification is desirable but not essential
* Willingness to travel occasionally for short‑term site work across the UK
