The post-holder is responsible for assigning correct clinical codes to diagnoses and operative procedures against nationally agreed standards, in order to produce reliable clinical information for commissioning, reimbursement (based on HRG assignment), audit, research, and performance indicator production.
The post-holder will work with clinicians regularly to validate their coding, ensuring more accurate coding to facilitate the Payment by Results process.

Key Responsibilities
1. Communication
2. Attend seminars and training courses to stay updated on clinical coding standards and communicate these to staff.
3. Participate in departmental meetings to discuss and agree on local policies and coding conventions, ensuring consistency with national standards.
4. Act as the lead contact with designated specialties, communicating complex coding issues with clinicians to ensure accuracy and consistency.
5. Attend clinical and management meetings to discuss coding rules and guidelines, raising awareness of the importance of clinical coding.
1. Analytical and Planning
2. Abstract and analyze complex clinical information from patient records, translating it into coded data according to national standards.
3. Code a specified number of episodes daily.
4. Manage the abstraction and analysis of sensitive information, including exposure to disturbing details or photographs.
5. Maintain a high level of knowledge in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.

2. Assist in organizing daily operations and prioritize workload to ensure accurate, timely, and complete coding.

2. Report problems in the office to the appropriate manager.
3. Follow health and safety procedures and monitor supplies as needed.

2. Mentor and assist less experienced coders.
3. Collaborate with management to develop and monitor coding standards, ensuring high-quality, timely, and accurate coding.

2. Use national and international coding rules (ICD10, OPCS4) and medical knowledge to translate diagnostic and procedural data into coded information.
3. Work as part of a team, rotating duties across specialties.
4. Locate and analyze source documents, including histology and cytology reports.
5. Manage and resolve complex clinical information inquiries.
6. Ensure proper processing and tracking of patient records, both paper and electronic.
7. Utilize specialized coding software and adhere to relevant legislation and policies regarding health and safety, confidentiality, and data protection.
