Join to apply for the Mechanical Fitter - Contractor role at Automated Architecture (AUAR)
At AUAR, we're on a mission to make sustainable housing universally accessible. Our small but ambitious team has built a fully integrated tech stack spanning the value chain, from cloud‑based design to pop‑up robotic Micro Factories. We've made great progress in building and refining our technology to ensure that our customers (Home‑builders) can build cost‑effectively with timber. We've proven ROI for our first customers and we have the cash to scale our business across the UK, EU and US.
We’re passionate about making a positive impact on both people and the planet, and we’re looking for individuals who share our values and drive to help us achieve the next stage of our mission.
About the Role
We’re looking for a hands‑on Mechanical Fitter - Contractor to join us on a 6 month contract, to help us assemble and run our robotic micro‑factory’s – a system that builds timber components automatically. You’ll play a key role in daily operations, assembling hardware, testing new upgrades, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring our workshop runs smoothly.
This is a practical, varied role that suits someone who enjoys getting stuck in: one day you’ll be setting up material and running tests; the next, you might be building assemblies, inspecting output from our micro‑factory, or installing new hardware onto the cell. You’ll work closely with our team of automation engineers on a day to day basis.
* Assembly and installation of hardware into Micro‑Factories
* Run the robotic micro‑factory to test reliability, performance, and upgrades
* Prepare and organise testing materials ahead of programs
* Organise and maintain a well managed workshop
* Perform and record inspection checks on timber frames produced by the micro‑factory
* Carry out regular maintenance and ensure a tidy, safe workspace
You’re practical, proactive, and curious – someone who enjoys figuring out how things work and isn’t afraid to get your hands dirty. You’ll be comfortable dealing with high levels of ambiguity and applying judgment so we can move at pace.
Must‑haves
* A recognised mechanical/electrical based apprenticeship as a fitter/assembler, mechanic, or other equivalent education and experience. Documentation of relevant and extensive experience may compensate for lack of education.
* Confident working with hand tools
* Basic understanding of mechanical systems and sensors
* Comfortable working with high levels of ambiguity
* Self‑driven and hands‑on approach to problem solving
* Strong attention to detail
Nice‑to‑haves
* Some experience working with CNC machines / Robotics
* Interest in automation, fabrication, or timber construction
What We Offer
* Opportunity to work at the intersection of robotics, construction, and sustainability
* A values‑led working culture where ideas are encouraged and collaboration is key
* Be part of a small, ambitious team redefining how we build homes
This is an in person role which requires coming into our North‑East London office 5 days a week.
We’re building a team as diverse as the communities we serve. If this role excites you, even if you don’t meet every single requirement, we’d still love to hear from you.
