Overview
We're hiring a Lead Database Administrator for a public sector subsidiary delivering critical services.
This is a senior, hands-on position with end-to-end ownership of a complex database estate, spanning on-premises and cloud platforms. You will act as the technical authority for database strategy, standards, and design, ensuring systems are secure, resilient, and optimised for performance.
Operating in a high-availability, SLA-driven environment, you'll play a key role in supporting business-critical systems while influencing architectural decisions and driving continuous improvement across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Own and lead the administration of database environments across development, test, and production
Act as the technical authority for database design, standards, and best practice, influencing decisions across engineering and delivery teams
Diagnose and resolve complex, high-impact performance and availability issues affecting critical systems
Design and implement robust high availability, backup, recovery, and replication strategies
Provide leadership on database architecture within projects, ensuring secure, scalable, and cost-effective solutions
Manage database security, access controls, and compliance with organisational and regulatory standards
Collaborate with internal teams, senior stakeholders, and external suppliers (e.g. Microsoft, Oracle) to deliver and support services
Support and contribute to cloud-based database platforms (Azure/AWS) and ongoing modernisation initiatives
Lead continuous improvement, embedding new processes, tools, and ways of working across teams
Build capability within the team by mentoring others and promoting best practices in database administration and design
Maintain documentation, standards, and governance processes to ensure auditability and service quality
