We are seeking a highly skilled midwife with experience of complex antenatal care who is motivated to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver exceptional screening and fetal medicine services to join the team as the deputy antenatal and newborn screening and fetal medicine midwife. This is a band 6 role for 22.5 hours per week.

The role of the deputy specialist midwife for the Antenatal (AN)and newborn screening and Fetal Medicine service is to support the screening programme and fetal medicine service at Lancashire Teaching Hospital. If you think this might be the challenge that you are looking for then apply today.

Main duties of the job

With experience related to complex antenatal care, managing fetal abnormalities and neonatal screening programmes, the deputy lead midwife will ensure a high-quality care is provided for women and families in line with national evidence/recommendations. They will also support the implementation and oversight of any additional antenatal screening programmes as determined by the National Screening Committee and national programme standard.

They should ensure that they have a working knowledge of the failsafe processes which prompt recognition and investigation of any missed screening opportunity.

Working autonomously, the deputy specialist midwife will support the day-to-day provision of the antenatal screening services. They must be confident to discuss a large range of screening issues with women, their families, and the multi- professional team (MDT), which will inevitably include difficult and sensitive issues whist offering unbiased, impartial support and enabling informed decision making.

The deputy specialist midwife will also work collaboratively to coordinate the day-to-day provision of the complex fetal medicine cases and third trimester monitoring when complications have arisen.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Support the delivery of a level of service which is equitable, evidence based and consistent with the recommendations and standards of the UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) for Antenatal Screening.

You will utilise your midwifery expertise and enhanced experience and clinical skill in relation to antenatal pathways and to contribute to the multidisciplinary care pathway in ensuring delivery of safe care with compassion.

Act as a resource for other healthcare staff in relation to all issues related to the antenatal screening offering specialist advice.

Continuously monitor quality and effectiveness of the screening programmes, taking effective action to address issues and promote safety and quality and implement changes as appropriate. In addition the role includes:

Support the coordination of the fetal medicine service and the screening programme.

To provide high quality evidence-based care to women with complex pregnancies or whose fetus has a confirmed or suspected abnormality.

To support women with highly specialist information and counselling when a fetal abnormality is suspected or diagnosed.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

1. Registered Midwife
2. Degree in Midwifery
3. Evidence of continuing professional development
4. e-LfH Antenatal and Newborn Screening e-learning Module

Desirable criteria

5. Understanding of theories of antenatal and newborn screening

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

6. Evidence of working in complex antenatal and postnatal care
7. Understand the significance of partnership and multiagency working with women and families.
8. Experience of liaison with outside agency and partnership working
9. Ability to implement changes within practice.
10. Knowledge of risk management and clinical governance and the relevance to practice
11. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
12. Knowledge of ethical issues

Desirable criteria

13. Experience working within a screening team or complex antenatal clinic.
14. Experience working within a fetal medicine service.
15. Haemoglobinopathy counselling
16. ARC training
17. Evidence of multi-agency working
