The Kingfisher Mother and Baby Unit is looking for a parent infant therapist to join our team. This role involves providing specialist parent infant interventions to mothers and babies on the ward, working alongside and supporting the nursery nurse team, and offering reflective spaces to the wider clinical team, to help "hold the baby in mind". The Kingfisher Mother and Baby Unit is a specialist 8 bed in‑patient ward, which cares for women in the last trimester of pregnancy or within the baby’s first year of life, who are experiencing serious mental illness.


Main duties of the job

The post holder would offer therapeutic interventions to mothers and babies, drawing on evidence‑based interventions such as video interactive guidance, circle of security, mentalisation work and brief psychodynamic interventions. Specialist clinical supervision will be provided. You would be part of a wider therapies team, which includes a clinical psychologist, assistant psychologist, occupational therapist and lead nursery nurse. The post holder would be asked to contribute to multi‑disciplinary discussions and ward rounds and to offer reflective spaces to staff.

There are links with the wider community perinatal services and our Norfolk Parent and Infant Relationship service (PAIRS).


Qualifications

* A relevant core profession
* A master’s in psychotherapy and registration with either UKCP or BACP. Adult psychotherapists must meet category 3 requirements on the SCoPEd Framework. Child Psychotherapists must meet level 2 or 3 standards on the AIMH
* Fully trained in two or more psychological interventions prescribed in the psychological therapies guidance for perinatal mental health framework – EMDR, IPT, CTfD, VIG, CoS
* A psychotherapy supervision qualification.


Experience

* Must have clinical experience of working with mothers, babies, infants and families in a clinical capacity
* The candidate must have prior experience of working with adults with mental health difficulties
* Experience of offering brief psychodynamic psychotherapeutic clinical work
* Experience of working with hard to engage families with complex needs
* Experience of working in multi‑professional teams and collaborating on treatment plans
* Experience of working in a specialist perinatal mental health team, mother and baby unit or parent and infant relationship service


Skills

* Capacity to communicate clearly and effectively about complex issues, including risk, both in written form and verbally
* Provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information; understand barriers to communication; able to communicate well in situations that may be hostile, antagonistic or highly emotive
* Elicits highly sensitive information, sometimes working through interpreters or advocates e.g. behaviour, state of mind, where there is a need for reassurance, empathy, and to gain agreement from the patient/client to a therapeutic regime; conflict resolution skills
* Ability to monitor and assess risk and act accordingly
* Competency in specialist assessment and forming appropriate care plans based on the assessment
* Ability to provide services in a variety of environments as meets the needs of clients and contracted work
* Capacity to use advanced observation assessment tools such as the CARE index


Knowledge

* Knowledge of new‑born, early infancy and child development, theories of infant and child mental health
* Good knowledge of adult mental health difficulties and how these might impact on the parent‑infant relationship
* Knowledge of policies and procedures relating to Child Protection
* Knowledge of evidence‑based approaches to working with parents and infants and an awareness of the relevant guidelines and care pathways for perinatal / parent infant mental health services
* Knowledge of universal care pathways for parents and infants
* Ability to demonstrate a mature capacity to use reflective supervision
* A resilience to working with parents and infants in difficult circumstances, and to offer containment to other team members impacted by the emotional impact of the work
