Job Description
Director of Public Health needed for a 12-month contract by a local council.
£950 per day, INSIDE IR35.
2 days a week in office based just south of London.
You will lead the transformation of population health, reduce health inequalities, and protect the health and wellbeing of the council’s communities. This is a pivotal role at the heart of local public service delivery — offering strategic leadership across our public health system, working collaboratively with NHS partners, local authorities, and the voluntary sector.
THE ROLE
As statutory chief officer for public health, you will be the principal adviser on all public health matters across the council and wider system. You will:
* Lead the development and delivery of public health strategies aligned to the council’s Health & Wellbeing Strategy.
* Oversee public health improvement, health protection, and healthcare public health.
* Drive innovative, evidence-based interventions to improve population health outcomes.
* Collaborate across local and regional systems to integrate public health into broader decision-making.
* Champion data-led approaches to reducing health inequalities.
* Provide visible leadership during public health crises and maintain readiness for emergency planning and response.
THE CANDIDATE
Looking for experienced public health leaders who are:
* Registered with the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR), GMC or GDC as a public health specialist (or within 6 months of gaining registration).
* Proven leaders in system-wide change, with a track record in delivering population health improvement and working across complex, multi-agency environments.
* Skilled in strategic planning, public health intelligence, and engaging with political and community stakeholders.
Key Experience & Skills
* Substantial senior experience in public health practice and leadership.
* Strong understanding of health protection, healthcare commissioning, health improvement, and public health governance.
* Excellent communication, influence, and political awareness.
* Experience managing large budgets (circa £40m) and leading high-performing, multidisciplinary teams.
