Job Title: Wastewater Technical Data Analyst
Location: Falmer
Salary:Up to 40K, depending on experience
Contract type: Permanent | Full-time (37 hours per week)
Department: Operational Planning & Improvement
About the Role:
We’re looking for a WastewaterTechnical Data Analyst to join Southern Water at a pivotal point in our Data, Analytics and AI Transformation, with a dedicated focus on wastewater environmental spills.
Southern Water is making a significant, long term investment in data and digital capability to transform how we manage our assets, protect the environment, and meet future regulatory and operational challenges. At the heart of this transformation is our Data & Analytics Strategy, which treats data as a strategic asset and enables the business to move from reactive reporting to proactive, intelligence led decision making.
In this role, you will directly contribute to that strategy by helping to design, build and evolve spill focused analytical tools and insights. Your work will support the long term reduction of wastewater spills by improving how we identify risk, understand root causes, manage exceptions, and intervene earlier across our wastewater network.
You will be part of the Operational Planning & Improvement function, working closely with wastewater operations, environmental compliance, engineering, and digital teams. You’ll use modern, cloudbased data platforms and analytics to transform complex operational, telemetry, and environmental data into actionable intelligence that informs spill prevention, regulatory performance, and investment decisions.
This role goes beyond producing dashboards. It is about building enduring analytical capability — developing data products, models, and insight frameworks that will underpin Southern Water’s spill reduction and environmental performance for years to come.
What You’ll Do:
In this role, you will:
1. Develop and evolve data products, dashboards, and analytical tools focused on wastewater environmental spills, spill reduction, and regulatory exceptions.
2. Analyse spill events and near‑misses to identify root causes, systemic issues, and emerging risks across networks and assets.
3. Build exception‑based analytics to highlight abnormal performance, high‑risk sites, and deteriorating trends before spills occur.
4. Apply predictive and exploratory analytics to understand drivers of spills, including asset condition, rainfall, network behaviour, and operational responses.
5. Support the long‑term development of spill intelligence tools, moving beyond reactive reporting to proactive and preventative insights.
6. Work closely with wastewater operations, environmental compliance, and engineering teams to ensure insights translate into practical interventions and measurable improvements.
7. Contribute to Southern Water’s wider Digital & Analytics investment, embedding automation, modelling, and advanced analytics into wastewater performance management.
8. Continuously improve data quality, analytical methods, and insight relevance to support regulatory performance and environmental outcomes.
About You:
We’re looking for someone who combines strong analytical capability with a clear environmental purpose. You’ll be motivated by tackling complex problems and delivering insights that lead to real‑world spill reduction.
Essential skills and experience:
9. Strong experience in data analysis, operational insight, or business intelligence.
10. Proven ability to work with complex datasets and identify patterns, exceptions, and risks.
11. Proficiency in tools such as Python, SQL, Power BI, and/or other analytics platforms (e.g. Alteryx, Databricks).
12. Experience translating data into clear, actionable insights for operational and environmental decision‑making.
13. Excellent communication skills and the confidence to work with multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable experience:
14. Experience working with wastewater, environmental, or utility data.
15. Knowledge of SCADA, telemetry, or event‑based datasets.
16. Exposure to predictive analytics, modelling, or long‑term performance frameworks.
17. A strong interest in environmental protection, sustainability, or regulatory compliance.
Why Join Southern Water:
At Southern Water, data, analytics and AI are central to how we are transforming the business and addressing some of the most complex challenges facing the water industry — particularly wastewater environmental spills.
Through our Data, Analytics and AI Transformation Programme, we are investing in:
18. A modern, secure, cloud‑based data platform that replaces fragmented legacy systems.
19. Strong data governance and ownership, ensuring trusted, high‑quality data.
20. A growing data literacy culture, empowering teams to make smarter, evidence‑based decisions.
21. The rollout of foundational and advanced AI capabilities, including predictive analytics and automation.
22. Use ofreal‑time analytics to support time‑critical operational decisions.
Our transformation roadmap is deliberately phased. We are building strong data foundations while simultaneously migrating and modernising critical operational reporting. From there, we are moving into advanced capabilities — real‑time monitoring, automated insights, predictive spill risk identification, and proactive asset and network management.
As a Wastewater Improvement Data Analyst, you will be at the forefront of this investment, applying these new capabilities to drive tangible environmental outcomes. Your work will directly support:
23. Reduction of wastewater environmental spills through predictive and exception‑based analytics.
24. Enhanced regulatory compliance and reporting, underpinned by trusted, consistent data.
25. Smarter infrastructure investment decisions, informed by evidence and risk‑based insight.
26. Improved environmental performance, enabled by near‑real‑time monitoring and earlier intervention.
You’ll join a purpose‑driven, multidisciplinary team where analytics is not an add‑on, but a critical enabler of operational excellence and environmental protection. This is an opportunity to work on high‑impact, nationally significant challenges, while helping to shape the future of how Southern Water uses data and digital technology to serve customers and protect the environment.
