Data Privacy Legal Counsel VP
Provide expert legal advice, support and risk management on data privacy and related matters to the bank’s business units, middle and back office, international and group functions, and liaise with legal colleagues across the organisation.
Purpose of the role
Ensure that the Cyber, Data, IP & Emerging Tech Legal activities are conducted in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and help the bank manage legal and reputational risks associated with these activities.
Key Responsibilities
* Development and implementation of best‑practice legal strategies for risk management and compliance.
* Legal advice and support to the business on cybersecurity, data privacy, intellectual property (IP) and emerging tech matters.
* Representation of the bank in legal proceedings related to cybersecurity, data privacy, IP protection and emerging tech (litigation, arbitration & regulatory investigations).
* Creation and review of legal documents such as data protection policies, cybersecurity protocols, IP licences and emerging tech policies to ensure compliance.
* Legal research and analysis to stay up to date on changes in laws and regulations that may impact the bank.
* Developing and delivering training programmes on legal and regulatory requirements related to cybersecurity, data privacy, IP protection and emerging tech.
* Pro‑active identification, communication and provision of legal advice on applicable laws and regulations; ensuring they are reflected in relevant policies, standards and controls.
* Contribute to strategy, drive requirements and make recommendations for change; plan resources, budgets and policies; manage and maintain policies and processes.
* Provide leadership or specialist guidance for technical direction, training and coaching of junior staff.
* Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management on functional and cross‑functional impact and alignment.
* Manage and mitigate risks through assessment, supporting the control and governance agenda.
* Demonstrate leadership, accountability and a comprehensive understanding of organisational functions to achieve business goals.
* Collaborate with other areas, stay aligned with business strategy and deliver innovative solutions.
Qualifications & Experience
* Qualified lawyer with data privacy experience and an interest in developing expertise.
* Experience gained in either private practice or in‑house.
* Ability to work independently and flexibly to identify risk and plan for change wrought by developing regulation.
* Experience with contracts, negotiations and drafting.
* Financial services experience (desirable but not essential).
* Broad data privacy expertise, including data subject access requests and international transfers of personal data.
* Ability to adapt and be comfortable working across different levels of the organisation.
