Job Overview
Detention Officer opportunities (full and part-time) have arisen, anticipated over the next 12 months, at the following locations: Kings Lynn, Aylsham, Wymondham, Martlesham, Bury St Edmunds and Great Yarmouth.
Training
Mandatory training: 4 weeks, first course commencing 10th August 2026 at Martlesham, Suffolk, followed by 2 weeks shadowing. Full accreditation as a Custody Detention Officer must be achieved upon training completion.
Responsibilities
* Caring for and welfare of detained persons: provision of food, drink, medication as directed, health assessments, religious observance and reasonable adjustments for disabled individuals.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills; experience handling conflict; capacity to work in restricted areas and confined spaces.
* General care and maintenance checks for cells, interview and changing rooms.
* Complete all administration functions in the custody suite; take fingerprints, photographs, DNA samples and drug testing on arrest samples from detainees.
* Escort duties and constant observation of detainees when required.
Required Criteria
* Good numeracy and literacy skills
* Good face‑to‑face customer service skills
* Ability to maintain control of difficult situations and individuals
* Physical ability to restrain detainees
* Experience working to strict procedures and guidelines
* Experience working effectively as part of a team
* Resilience and ability to manage time-critical priorities
* Basic keyboard skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
* Full driving licence (to drive police vehicles)
Desirable Criteria
* Previous experience supervising the welfare of others
Benefits
Shift allowance of 20 % applies to the full‑time role, pro‑rated for part‑time patterns. Team allocation will depend on resourcing needs at appointment.
