Job overview

The Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield Bowel Cancer Screening Programme invites men and women aged 50‑74 to complete an at‑home test kit (Faecal Immunochemical Test – FIT). A positive test offers them the opportunity to attend a screening colonoscopy to determine whether they have bowel cancer or a potential bowel cancer. The programme also includes Lynch Surveillance patients and covers a large geographical area encompassing Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust and the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust.


Main duties of the job

* Act as the referred participants contact and support, providing advice before decision to take part in screening.
* Through Nurse‑Led Clinics, assess participant suitability, acceptability and fitness for the screening examination and request alternative screening examinations if appropriate.
* Coordinate, monitor and review the participants’ screening centre journey, liaising and referring to members of the screening team as appropriate.
* Use specialist knowledge and advanced communication skills to break bad news and provide psychological support on diagnosis, treatment and symptom management.
* Act as Key Worker for individuals with cancer or malignant polyps confirmed by histology/cytology.
* Act as advocate and put forward views and wishes on behalf of the referred participant.
* Provide support in collaboration with the wider public‑health and promotion teams to maximise participation in the BCSP.
* Provide follow‑up/surveillance nurse‑led face‑to‑face and telephone clinics for all participants.
* Ensure all mandatory datasets are completed in a timely manner in real time.
* Ensure participants meet the 28‑day and 62‑day targets wherever possible.


Detailed responsibilities

* Provide the highest standard of care for patients participating in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
* Attend Health Promotion events and participate in Screening Quality Assurance Service visits.
* Promote sharing of skills, knowledge and experience within the screening centre and wider community.
* Assist in auditing and acting on any anomalies in partnership with Lead SSPs, Programme Manager and Clinical Director.
* Hold a valid driving licence to enable travel between community clinics, endoscopy units and the designated central office.
* Work hours over any 7 days, including evenings and weekends when required, across multiple sites.
* Maintain and safely use SSP equipment and office equipment, reporting any faulty equipment.
* Coordinate patients through the screening pathway to achieve 28‑day and 62‑day targets.
* Perform any other duties required to ensure continuity of service.


Person specification


Qualifications and Training

* 4 years post NMC registration.
* Completion and pass of Liverpool John Moores Specialist Screening Practitioner course, or willingness to undertake and pass within 12 months.
* Demonstrated varied clinical nursing background.
* Completed relevant courses and demonstrated ongoing professional development.
* SSP experience.
* Experience working with colorectal services.
* Autonomous working and ability to manage/prioritise individuals through the cancer pathways.
* Knowledge of Bowel Cancer Screening System/ Electronic Patient Record system and other clinical systems.
* Knowledge and access to Mid Yorkshire Trust clinical systems.


Knowledge, experience and expertise

* Demonstrated varied clinical nursing background.
* Patient assessment and history taking.
* Autonomous working and the ability to manage/prioritise individuals through the cancer pathways.
* Experience working with colorectal services.

This role is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) and the Disclosure and Barring Service. It requires a valid driving licence and will involve travel between sites.
