Our Volunteer Drivers provide a key transport service to patients, enabling them to access the Hospice and community events to support their wellbeing. Volunteer Drivers operate the Hospice minibus to extend service accessibility to a wider range of patients.
Note: Volunteer Drivers are subject to an Enhanced DBS check.
When am I needed?
Volunteer drivers should be available during weekday daytimes, able to reach the Hospice, and competent in driving a minibus.
* 2nd Tuesday of the month 10:30 - 13:30 for transporting patients to MND socials at The Folk Hall in News Earswick.
* 4th Wednesday of the month 13:00 - 17:00 for transporting patients to the MND social at the Hospice.
There are potential additional opportunities as the Wellbeing & Outreach services expand.
What will I be doing?
* Driving patients safely and comfortably between their homes and St Leonard’s or community venues within our catchment area.
* Recording journey mileage and destinations.
* Keeping driving documents up to date.
What skills and qualities will I need?
* Enjoy driving with a full, clean driving licence.
* Friendly, warm personality.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Calm and unflappable demeanor.
* Understanding of mobility issues.
* Respect for boundaries and confidentiality.
* Physical ability to move, lift, or store a wheelchair if needed.
* Adherence to confidentiality and safety policies.
* Punctuality, reliability, and common sense.

Support and Training
Supervised by the Wellbeing & Outreach team, volunteers receive ongoing training, planning, and support. The Volunteer Services Team assists with induction and general enquiries.
Mandatory training modules are completed online, with additional refresher training provided as needed via e-learning, videos, or face-to-face sessions. Community-specific training will also be available.
