Europe Mechanical Engineer & Project Engineer – Bakelite

Position Overview

Provide expert opinion, guidance, approval and leadership on mechanical, structural and metallurgical designs to engineering and operations to ensure compliance with EU Pressure Equipment Directive, UK Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulation and other safety regulations. Provide leadership on mechanical integrity and risk mitigation of critical equipment.

Provide project management services for the implementation of assigned projects, leading key capital projects in conjunction with site teams and European engineering and technical resources.


Job Responsibilities

* Lead management of Mechanical Integrity across all European sites, overseeing integrity assessments for high‑risk assets, responding to inspection outcomes and managing changes through internal and external resources.
* Own the Mechanical Integrity Criticality Assessment Register, revising it based on assessment findings and new assets from projects.
* Work with external consultants to develop RBI‑based written schemes of examination for all mechanical integrity assets (pressure vessels, heat exchangers, tanks, pipework, etc.).
* Act as SME for asset Mechanical Integrity across the business, assessing degradation mechanisms, failure modes, material selection for hazardous applications, developing repair plans and investigating failures.
* Report on asset condition and compliance of MI inspections using SAP, identifying high‑risk assets, end‑of‑life planning and non‑compliant assets.
* Generate design scopes of work for mechanical and structural applications for projects across Europe.
* Serve as approval authority for all mechanical and structural designs for EU sites.
* Develop and own mechanical and structural engineering standards (pipe service index, pipe classes, pipe stress, vessel design, metallurgy selection, structural design, etc.).
* Manage the capital plan and projects for each site, working with EU Projects and engineering teams to deliver design content on time and within budget.


Decision‑Making Authority

* Collaborate with stakeholders (site maintenance leaders, site leaders, central and site engineering resources) to agree on key decisions such as repair plans.
* Final approval of piping and vessel inspection protocols (WSE and RBI plans) for all EU sites.
* Final approval of mechanical equipment repair plans across all EU sites.
* Final approval of all mechanical and structural designs for new or modified equipment across all EU sites.

Required – Education & Experience

* University degree in Mechanical Engineering.
* Knowledge of applicable EU standards and Directives related to mechanical and structural design (e.g., Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU, Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, Seveso Directive).
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially with non‑native English speakers.
* Minimum 10 years of experience in a mechanical or project engineering role within the chemical or other process industries.
* Experience managing mechanical integrity programmes, from WSE to inspection, degradation analysis and repairs.


Travel

Travel within Europe for periods (typical duration 1 week). Travel may be required when business requires.
