Job summary
The successful applicant will join an established team of 6 consultants (4.2 WTE) and 2 registrars in a friendly, dynamic & forward-thinking department with on-site laboratory.
The department seeks a full-time Consultant in Medical Microbiology or Medical Microbiology/ID or Consultant Clinical Scientists in Medical Microbiology. On-call duties are anticipated to be approx. 1:5-1:6 weekdays and weekends with prospective cover & category A availability supplement.
Bury St Edmunds is a lovely, historic market town in East Anglia, with leisure and cultural offerings. It has easy transport links to Cambridge, Norwich, the coast, and London, as well as Stansted and Norwich airports and Harwich port for international travel.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidates will share responsibility for providing a comprehensive clinical microbiology service to the Trust, local GPs, and other contracted organizations. All consultants are expected to contribute to departmental activities including:
* Interpretation & authorisation of results
* Ward rounds & MDTs
* Infection prevention & control advice
* Maintaining a quality laboratory & clinical microbiology service and contributing to UKAS accreditation activities
* Fulfilling lead roles on a rotational basis (by mutual agreement): Microbiology Clinical Lead/Laboratory Director, Infection Prevention Doctor, Antimicrobial Stewardship Lead, Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy Lead
* Teaching and leadership development of all staff grades, including training as a Clinical/Educational Supervisor
* On-call commitment (approx. 1:5-1:6 weekdays and weekends, usually telephone cover), with remote access provided via Trust laptop. An additional 1 PA is paid for this out-of-hours commitment, reviewed annually.

The Microbiology Department
The department provides comprehensive microbiology services across various settings, with recent UKAS accreditation and ongoing developments. It is equipped with advanced diagnostic systems, participates in UKNEQAS schemes, and is involved in innovative testing like rapid antigen detection and molecular diagnostics.
The department is planning a new purpose-built facility to enhance service delivery. The post-holder will have access to IT systems, remote working capabilities, and support for professional development.
Person Specification
Qualifications, experience, skills, and attributes required are detailed in the attached Person Specification document, covering both medically qualified candidates and clinical scientists.
Applicants must meet GMC or HCPC registration requirements, demonstrate relevant experience, and possess excellent communication, technical, and teamwork skills. Additional desirable qualifications and experiences are also outlined.
