Description Role: Teacher of English/Drama Academy: Outwood Academy Riverside Start Date : 01/09/2026 (Temp for 1 year) Salary (Actual Salary): £32,916 - £45,352 Are you a dedicated and highly effective educator committed to raising the achievement of all students within your subject area? Join us as a Teacher, where you will be instrumental in delivering high-quality learning, utilising a range of teaching and learning strategies to ensure student success. This position requires a professional who is aware of strategies for improving learning, understands curriculum developments, and is creative in finding solutions to enhance student performance. Welcome from the Principal: We are a free school in the centre of Middlesbrough, and we do things differently! Do you? As Principal, I am proud to introduce you to Outwood Academy Riverside, an innovative free school within a nationally renowned Trust that nurtures talent and provides high-quality professional development. Opened in 2020, Riverside is a special place to work with genuine care for every family member. Our community is built on core values, including kindness, compassion, respect, and integrity. We maintain academic rigour and high expectations, resulting in very good behaviour and attendance that is above the national average. Students face no 'glass ceiling' and benefit from exceptional personal development opportunities (including Cadets, MiSST, and LAMDA). This is a unique opportunity to join an inspirational team making history. We are currently on Russell Street (with a satellite site in Eston) and are planning a move to a new, state-of-the-art facility by 2027. If you genuinely love working with children and will go above and beyond for our young people, we would love to hear from you. Would you like to be part of this journey? About the Department: We have eight teachers, a specialist literacy teaching assistant and a one-to-one tutor. The department is a combination of experienced staff and more recent entrants to the profession, and is given strategic direction by two supportive and determined leaders. More experienced teachers will value the clear sense of purpose and organisation in the department and recently-trained colleagues will find it a rewarding place to start a career in English teaching. Every classroom has a visualiser and these are used extensively by the team. Some classrooms have large television screens and others interactive whiteboards. There is a library with a wide range of fiction to support students’ reading needs which is run by a full-time enthusiastic librarian. There is a strong whole-school literacy strategy which aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading. This includes reading in form time, Accelerated Reader and a variety of reading interventions for readers who are not yet proficient. The specialist literacy teaching assistant uses the Ruth Miskin phonics programme to support emergent readers. As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications. The programme of study is fully resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. We aim to make all our teachers ‘experts’ in preparing students for GCSE examinations, using our thorough and systematic methods devised over many years. We look forward to working with you, whether you are an aspiring ECT or an experienced teacher. If you have any questions or would like to visit the school, please contact Michael Wood (HoD) m.wood@riverside.outwood.com Responsibilities The Teacher is expected to implement and use a wide range of teaching and learning strategies within the classroom, applying techniques like Assessment for Learning (AfL) to continually improve student performance. A core duty involves effectively using student level data to identify areas for development and raise standards. This professional must be aware of strategies available for improving the learning and achievement of all students, alongside possessing a good understanding of curriculum developments within their specific subject area. The role requires maintaining high expectations for all students and effectively communicating with students and their parents, both orally and in writing. The teacher is expected to work collaboratively as part of a team, sharing good practice across the department, and demonstrating creativity in problem solving and a willingness to adopt new approaches.
