East West Rail is a proposed new direct connection, linking communities between Oxford and Cambridge and in the process of applying for a development consent order for the scheme. East West Rail will deliver growth and prosperity both locally and for the whole country; connecting these two cities and the communities in between is crucial to the social and economic future of the region.
East West Railway Company was set up to accelerate the delivery of the East West Rail infrastructure and passenger services, bringing faster journey times and easing pressure on local roads.
We were set up by the Secretary of State for Transport in 2017 to do things differently. We aim to innovate, positively disrupt, and challenge the status-quo, leading to quicker and more cost-effective project delivery, and an improved experience for passengers and the communities we serve.
Team dimensions:
East West Rail operates a matrix structure. Reporting directly to the Head of Environment
* Maintain close working relationship with all relevant EWR Co team members, including technical teams such as Engineering, Procurement, Health & Safety and Quality Management.
* Given the early stage of the project, it is likely that the nature of the role may evolve as the project progresses to provide ongoing support to the delivery of environmental sustainability within EWR Co. It is also possible that other ad-hoc activities and duties may be required.
Key Responsibilities
As Environmental Systems Manager for the East West Rail scheme you will:
* Work alongside the Head of Environment and project Environment and Sustainability Managers, to lead on developing, managing and maintaining the EWR Co Environmental Management System (EMS), to achieve and maintain certification to ISO14001
* Support the delivery of EWR Co’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy and associated implementation plans
* Develop and maintain environmental performance reporting tools and processes
* Support the design, construction and operation of the railway by maintaining a system compatible with the technical and sponsor requirements, environmental commitments, environmental legislation and best practice
* Lead in the development, implementation and maintenance of environmental management policies, standards, procedures and processes during the design, construction and operation of the scheme
* Support the identification and delivery of training and awareness requirements
* Contribute to project change and risk management processes
* Maintain an EMS consistent with our aim to drive cost, time and wasted effort out of the programme
* Support the management of other schemes and standards such as BREEAM and PAS 2080 and ISO20400
* Take responsibility for your own and others’ health and safety and for those who may be affected in the day-to-day delivery of this role by adopting and working to all relevant EWR Co. Health and Safety principles and procedures at all times
* Promote diversity in the workplace and adopt appropriate behaviour when interacting with colleagues
* Proactively manage environmental deliverables and engage with wider teams to ensure our environmental sustainability objectives are realized.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
As Environmental Systems Manager for the East West Rail scheme, you will have experience in major projects or DCO’s along with being an organsied self-starter with a track record in delivering clear objectives.
You will have strong communications skills and have a proactive mindset to think laterally to achieve an outcome.
Preferably, you will also have some experience of holding roles in fast paced and complex environments during the setup of a new organisation.
Your skills and experience will include:
* Demonstrable experience of developing, managing and maintaining effective Environmental Management Systems (EMS), to achieve and maintain certification to ISO14001
* Demonstrable experience of working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams on large infrastructure projects
* Strong written and verbal communication skills and the aptitude to rationally and simply explain, explore and discuss environmental issues.
* Excellent organisation skills and a proven ability to work under pressure, prioritise and meet deadlines
* Be highly self-motivated to deliver outputs and be resilient to potential barriers.
* Confidence in dealing with high levels of uncertainty and ambiguity in a constantly changing and challenging environment
* Working knowledge of the UK environmental regulatory framework, legislation and current environmental best practice as it relates to large infrastructure projects
Education and Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree/MSc (or equivalent) in a relevant environmental discipline or equivalent business experience and training
* Practitioner or Full member of IEMA/Chartered Environmentalist or demonstrable intent to achieve this in the short term.
* Excellent knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint
* Good working knowledge of ProjectWise or similar is desirable.
