Job Overview

Specialist Grade Doctor – Frays Ward, Acute Service at Riverside Centre, Hillingdon Mental Health Hospital.

Fixed‑Term, 12 Months, Full‑Time 10 PAs. The post holder will provide in‑patient care for all patients admitted to Frays Ward under the supervision of the Consultant Psychiatrist.

The post holder will undertake assessments, in conjunction with nursing or other members of the multi‑disciplinary team, of those referred to the service. This will include providing support and advice to referring services should admission not be required.

A good communicator who works well in a team. Some experience and knowledge of physical health conditions is essential.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Provide senior clinical decision‑making oversight of patients on Frays Ward, ensuring decisions incorporate risk assessments and clinical presentations.
* Detailed clerking, history taking and initiation of all necessary investigations and assessments for patients, including physical health.
* Establish, initiate and evaluate treatment plans and risk assessments in collaboration with the multi‑disciplinary team and under the supervision of the Consultant Psychiatrist.
* Interview relatives and informal carers of patients as required.
* Undertake referrals to other disciplines and services within the multi‑disciplinary team and externally.
* Observe Trust and local policies and procedures, including those related to medicines management and physical healthcare.
* Prepare medico‑legal reports, including those for Managers hearings and Medical Health Review Tribunals for in‑patients.
* Complete full risk assessments of all in‑patients in conjunction with the MDT.
* liaise with all external agencies as required.
* Be part of the 2nd on‑call rota (1 in 10) with attendance to the wards at weekends.
* Day‑to‑day clinical supervision of the junior doctor; supervision arrangements will be discussed with the covering consultant.


General Duties

* Review and advise on treatment plans and risk assessments for Frays Ward patients in collaboration with the MDT.
* Initiate and facilitate meetings with professionals and families as appropriate.
* Arrange safe transfers for each patient in a timely manner.
* Facilitate relevant referrals to mental health teams and other external services.
* Participate in MHA assessments.
* Adhere to Trust local policies and procedures related to medication and physical healthcare.
* Prepare medico‑legal reports for Frays Ward patients and support presentations to Managers hearings and Medical Health Review Tribunals.
* Complete full risk assessments for each patient in conjunction with the MDT on Frays Ward.
* Chair and supervise ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.
* Support training of nursing colleagues, medical and nursing students.
* Maintain accurate records of ward rounds and other reviews relevant to this role.
* Participate in continuing professional development.
* Participate in annual appraisal in line with the Trust policy.


Person Specification – Education and Qualifications

* Primary Medical Degree.
* Full GMC registration.
* GMC Licence to Practice.
* Section 12(2) MHA 1983 approved (or achieve within 6 months of appointment) or be on the Approved Clinician Register.
* Minimum of six years in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor or closed SAS grades.
* Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades, including overseas.


Desirable Qualifications

* MRCPsych (or equivalent).
* Additional postgraduate qualification relevant to the role.


Experience – Essential Criteria

* Proficient in risk assessment and management.
* Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.
* Experience of using the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act in an inpatient psychiatric setting.
* Demonstrable leadership skills.
* Adequate training in child and adult safeguarding.
* Ability to challenge others and escalating concerns when necessary.


Desirable Experience

* Experience of service development/business planning.
* High‑level knowledge of planned developments at a national level to improve efficiency and deliver quality services.

* Good interpersonal and communication skills in line with the Trust’s Core Behaviors.
* Communicates effectively using the English Language and shares decision‑making with patients, relatives and carers; promotes a person‑centred approach.
* Sound organisational skills.
* Awareness of leadership responsibilities and demonstrates appropriate leadership behaviour.
* Understanding of legal responsibilities relevant to the role, such as mental capacity, deprivation of liberty, data protection, equality and diversity.
* Ability to work on own initiative.

Frays Ward is part of the Acute Service Line at Riverside Centre, which includes the following wards:
• Frays Ward – 18 beds Acute Ward (male)
• Crane Ward – 18 beds Acute Ward (female)
• Colne Ward – 8 beds PICU (male)
