The Beeches Mother and Baby Unit team provide specialist inpatient care for up to 6 women with moderate to serious mental illness, during the perinatal period.

The perinatal period is a crucial and vulnerable time for woman.

We know as many as one in five women experience post or ante-natal depression, anxiety or in some cases severe mental illness such as psychosis during pregnancy or in the first year after childbirth.

The purpose of the Mother and Baby Unit is to keep the Mother & Baby together, whilst treating the mother's mental health and promoting or maintaining attachment and bonding.

We accept admission for women in late stages of pregnancy and up until the baby is 1 year old.

We aim to create a positive and supportive community to promote the mother's recovery and baby's development. The long-term benefits of this kind of specialist care offers early help and support to parents for them to build a healthy bond with their children and improves outcomes for the child.

Main duties of the job

The role of the nursery nurse within the team will be to provide parents with opportunities to positively interact and connect with their babies.

These opportunities will empower parents to support and understand the development of their baby and meet their holistic needs.

As a nursery nurse you will need to be able to bring a flexible, compassionate approach to working with mothers and their babies while offering broad range of appropriate activities.

A good understanding of infant development, attachment theory and care will be essential. Your previous experience and knowledge as a nursery nurse can help these families to grow and develop together.

You will be able to deliver both one-to-one and group interventions to support mothers to develop skills and confidence in caring for their baby.

You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team providing a high level of care for both the mothers and their babies. Therefore, good inter personal, communication and organisational skills are required.

The successful candidate will be required to work shifts including nights and weekends.

Local induction will be provided, in addition to supervision and ongoing specialist perinatal training opportunities.

The inpatient team has a wealth of experience and expertise in this area and you will be well supported by them.

Clinical and managerial supervision is embedded in the role.

The skill mix consists of consultant psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists and a social worker.

Local induction will be provided and there is opportunity to access specialist training specific to the role.

A good understanding of safeguarding children procedures is an essential requirement of the job along with excellent communication skills as you will be working with families sometimes in times of distress.
