An established, high-performing distribution business operating across the UK and Northern Ireland is seeking an experienced Head of Fleet to lead the strategic, operational, and compliance management of a large, diverse vehicle fleet. With over 20 branches nationwide and year-on-year growth in sales and profitability, this business plays a vital role in the UK's construction supply chain - providing specialist products and outstanding service to its customers. About the Role The Head of Fleet will be responsible for setting and delivering a clear strategic vision for fleet operations - ensuring efficiency, safety, and sustainability across all sites. You will manage a significant capital asset, overseeing a complex fleet of HGVs, vans, and specialist equipment, while ensuring full legal compliance and operational excellence. This is a pivotal leadership role requiring strong commercial acumen, deep technical knowledge, and the ability to drive innovation in fleet strategy and sustainability. Key Responsibilities Hold and maintain the company's Operator's Licence (O Licence), ensuring complete compliance across all transport operations. Act as the principal contact for the Traffic Commissioner and DVSA, managing all audits, inquiries, and compliance matters. Oversee a large, multi-site fleet of over 100 vehicles and 80 Moffett forklifts across 20 UK branches. Develop and implement a Future Fleet Strategy focusing on sustainability, alternative fuels, and long-term cost efficiency. Leverage technology such as telematics and in-cab camera systems to enhance safety, visibility, and performance. Manage relationships with vehicle and equipment suppliers, ensuring quality, value, and service standards are met. Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., HSEQ, HR, Finance) to align fleet operations with wider business objectives. Promote a strong Fleet Safety culture, driving compliance, engagement, and performance among all drivers and operatives. About You A proven fleet leader, you'll combine operational expertise with a strategic mindset and a commitment to continuous improvement. You'll bring credibility, confidence, and the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels. Essential skills and experience: Current O Licence qualification Managers CPC Extensive senior management experience in a large, complex, multi-site fleet operation (including HGVs). Strong working knowledge of transport legislation, maintenance, and roadworthiness. Proven experience liaising directly with Traffic Commissioners and/or DVSA. Successful track record of achieving FORS Gold accreditation or equivalent. Legal understanding of transport, haulage, or commercial contracts. Commercial awareness and strong negotiation skills.
