Coroners court officer

Kent County Council
Court officer
Posted: 13 October
Offer description

Overview

This is your chance to play a key support role within the Coroners' Office for Kent and Medway. You will work under judicial direction to deliver the administrative functions within the Coroners' Office while managing all aspects of inquests hearings in the Coroners' Court and all enquiries relating to reports of Treasure.

This post is considered by KCC to be a customer-facing position. The Council therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English/Welsh sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the Job Description/Person Specification.

Responsibilities

* Diligent in approach with a very high level of accuracy; you will work flexibly and collaboratively with the Coroners, Coroners Investigation Officers and Coroners Court volunteers to ensure effective and efficient service delivery. You will multi-task, prioritise and manage competing demands, with knowledge and experience using electronic databases and spreadsheets.
* Liaising with bereaved families, jurors and other witnesses to ensure they are fully aware of the process; ensuring inquest hearings are legally compliant.

Qualifications and requirements

* Fully committed to confidentiality, you will bring a proven track record in an administrative role with a strong customer service element, or alternatively in a responsible role in a court setting. You will have the communication and negotiation skills and initiative to engage with people suffering emotional distress and to facilitate circumstances where cultural or religious observances may be significant.
* With two A-levels or equivalent, you will have the ability to develop a sound understanding of relevant legislation, Chief Coroner's and other official guidance, including Kent County Council policies.

Location, hours and other details

The position is based at Oakwood House in Maidstone, where we are co-located with Courts. Should there be a need to work from a different location, the post-holder may be required to travel across Kent and Medway to transport court documents and equipment in a time‑efficient manner to meet service needs (e.g., to other courts or offices).

The post is full-time (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday) with two mandatory staff development Saturdays and 2 days residential training each year. The position is subject to an acceptable dress policy due to the nature of the role.
