Job summary

At UHCW we deliver around 6000 babies and women are able to choose whether they birth in the obstetric led unit, Lucina the alongside midwifery led unit or in the community, within their own home.

Main duties of the job

Our midwives have the opportunity to maintain their skills in all areas with our rotational programme, providing care in all settings. In addition to this we offer dedicated specialist teams offering Enhanced Maternal care, Complex Care Continuity Team supporting maternal medicine, perinatal mental health clinics and preterm prevention, and Continuity of Carer including women from culturally diverse backgrounds in collaboration with Coventry MAMTA Project Centre.

If you are a band 5 Midwife you will be supported by our award winning team of Clinical Preceptor Support Midwives (CPSM's) who will provide you with a named preceptor to provide additional pastoral support should it be required. We have a team of 9 Professional Midwifery Advocates (PMA), supported by a Lead PMA to provide restorative clinical supervision.

We are a forward thinking department, with many opportunities for midwives to become involved in a variety of specialities and work streams including recruitment, service and staff development and as Pathway to Excellence Ambassador. Individual career aspirations will be nurtured and fully supported to enhance career progression including internal leadership programmes and collaboration with the Florence Nightingale Foundation.

Job responsibilities

* Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
* Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.
* A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development.
* Responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients and management of a team, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated/audited.
* Responsible for the maintenance and development of her/his clinical skills
* Organisation of cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, resource, research and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate. (Band 6 only)
* Act for ward manager in her/his absence (Band 6 only)
* Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including; complex patient monitoring; equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures.
* Develop and educate staff, participating in mentorship and appraisal as required.
* Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available.
* Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring varying levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.
* Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
* To participate in teaching and preparation for parenthood sessions.
* Develop knowledge of the Child Protection strategy and its implementation.
* Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
* Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
* Participate in the on-call rota as part of the service needs supporting home birth and the Trust escalation policy.
