Research Fellow – Mesozoic plant chemistry and experimental taphonomy

School of Biosciences, Sutton Bonington Campus, University of Nottingham.


Location

Sutton Bonington Campus, University of Nottingham.


Salary

£35,608 to £47,389 per annum, depending on skills and experience (minimum £35,608 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.


Hours

Full-time (36.25 hours per week).


Duration

Fixed‑term full‑time role: 31 months, commencing June 2026 and ending December 2028.


Responsibilities

* Design, conduct and analyze plant taphonomy experiments.
* Generate chemical data from experimental and fossil plant samples, including carbon isotope analysis and FTIR analysis.
* Compare chemical data with morphological, anatomical and ecophysiological traits to understand plant performance in the Middle Jurassic greenhouse world.
* Use experimental framework to link plant morphology and chemistry to measurements of ecophysiological performance.
* Interpret results to explore how Middle Jurassic plants were adapted to their climatic conditions.


Qualifications

* PhD (or close to submission) in palaeobotany, palaeobiology, or a related discipline.
* Experience with Mesozoic plants, experimental taphonomy, carbon isotope analysis, or FTIR analysis.
* Strong data analysis skills.
* Initiative, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively.
