Overview

Research Project Support Officer in Fisheries Science – fixed-term, full-time role based in the Isle of Man at the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (DEFA). The post is associated with the School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University, and supports fisheries science research and advisory work for the Isle of Man Government.

Applications are invited for this full-time, fixed-term role with Bangor University, working as part of a small team providing independent fisheries science research and advice to the Isle of Man Government. The post-holder will be based full-time in the Isle of Man and will report to the scientific lead on the island, supported by the project lead and Bangor-based academics. The role may offer opportunities to register for a PhD alongside responsibilities.

The successful candidate will have a degree in fisheries or marine science (or equivalent experience) and must be capable of passing an ENG1 sea-going medical and Sea Survival course, be physically fit, and able to work at sea on a range of vessels, including in less favourable conditions.

The post-holder will be an employee of Bangor University and will be resident in the Isle of Man, qualifying for Isle of Man tax rates.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Provide research support in collecting data necessary to undertake stock assessment and implement sustainable management of European lobster, edible crab and common whelk in Isle of Man territorial waters.
* Support the team in other areas of fisheries science on the Isle of Man and wider-Irish Sea (e.g., mobile-gear stock assessments, ecosystem & conservation science, offshore wind farm impacts).
* Establish working relationships with Isle of Man fishers and processors to facilitate data collection; support data collection schemes.
* Undertake at-sea or port sampling of shellfish catches across the island.
* Assist in analysis of fishery-dependent and independent data using appropriate quantitative techniques.
* Contribute toward researching innovative techniques and technologies for fisheries science data and advice.
* Participate in the annual spring scientific cruise and industry surveys as necessary.
* Provide support to student placements and help design student projects addressing knowledge gaps relevant to DEFA and/or the fishing industry.
* Contribute to producing reports and scientific outputs for stakeholders and peer-reviewed publications.
* Report on a day-to-day basis to the senior post-doctoral fisheries scientist on the island and to the project lead in Bangor as required.

Qualifications


Essential

* Degree in marine or fisheries science or related area, or equivalent experience.


Desirable

* Postgraduate degree in marine or fisheries science or related area.


Experience/Knowledge


Essential

* Experience in marine field-work and at-sea sampling; experience working with stakeholders outside academia; experience in statistical analysis and mapping (e.g., R, Matlab, ArcGIS).
* Experience in producing written reports from quantitative information; awareness of fisheries data collection and analysis techniques.


Desirable

* Experience handling large data sets; ability to produce scientific reports to deadlines; experience with baited-pot fisheries or crustaceans/molluscs; experience using R for data handling and analysis; understanding of fisheries statistics and stock assessment methods; experience with EU Vessel Monitoring System and logbook data for spatial analysis.


Skills/Abilities


Essential

* Ability to work as part of a team and independently; able to pass ENG1 medical and Sea Survival; valid driving licence for travel around the Isle of Man; ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines; strong analytical skills and ability to present results clearly.


Desirable

* Ability to communicate science to diverse stakeholders; awareness of Bangor University’s bilingual context.
