Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Microbiology

We are looking for a highly motivated, experienced and energetic Biomedical Scientist or Specialist Biomedical Scientist. The successful applicant will be a suitably qualified and experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist. Participation in the weekend, Bank Holiday, late shift, and on call rotas is compulsory for Specialist Biomedical Scientists.
The successful candidate should also demonstrate excellent communication, social, and organisational skills. All duties will be performed to a professional standard as directed by the Health and Care Professions Council and Trust/departmental policies and procedures.
This post is based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, although occasional travel to The Princess Royal Hospital in Telford may be required.
Main duties of the job
The Microbiology laboratory at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital receives in excess of 400,000 samples per year. You will assist in the provision of a diagnostic Microbiology service for patients in both primary and secondary care settings. You will understand, organise and competently perform a range of laboratory procedures across Bacteriology, Mycology, Serology and Molecular Virology, either singly or as part of a team, that equate to the training and qualifications of a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered BMS.
As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, you will be required to support the provision of 7 days per week and on call service for Microbiology. You will be required to participate in the provision of the out of hours service either as a lone worker or as a team leader. You will be required to deputise for Senior BMS staff in their absence and take lead responsibility for a specialist section of the department, as required.
Biomedical Scientists will be required to support the provision of a 7 day working week, and are expected to train to gain competence in Bacteriology, Mycology, Serology and Molecular Virology sections.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or related subject
* Specialist Portfolio or equivalent in relevant subject
* Evidence of CPD
* Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science
Experience
* Experience of out-of-hours working/lone working
* Experience of working in NHS or equivalent
* Experience of multi-disciplinary working (Bacteriology, Mycology, Serology, Molecular)
* Familiarity with instrumentation used in the laboratory, or similar
* Experience of training or supervising junior members of staff
Knowledge
* Practical knowledge of Quality Management Systems
* Practical knowledge of Health and Safety
* Working knowledge of Pathology IT systems
* Experience with Microsoft software
