Main duties of the job

Weare excited to be able to offer a great opportunity for an experiencedregistered nurse to develop in a leadership role and to join our friendlyteam. Ward J93 is a 24 bedded non-surgical oncology ward.

Workingalongside the existing leadership team, the successful candidate will show anability to support patients, families, team members and the widermulti-disciplinary team. You will share our passion for deliveringpersonalised patient care and will understand the needs of the team requiredto deliver this.

Therole of the band 7 in co-ordinating and supervising staff is essential toensuring high standards of patient care, patient safety and outcomes andpromoting staff wellbeing. The role is integral in providing an efficientservice, supporting the admission and discharge of patients. J93 cares forpatients who have received radiation treatments and require specialist care.

Yourrole as Senior Sister / Charge Nurse will be to provide leadership supportand motivation to our high performing team, using critical thinking indecision making to maintain a safe and efficient environment for patients andfor staff. You will join an enthusiastic team, who will work together toensure that nursing, in conjunction with other aspects of clinical care, aredelivered to the highest standard, and in line with the local and nationalstrategy.

Job responsibilities

JOBPURPOSE/SUMMARY

TheJobholder will carry 24 hour continuing responsibility for the effective andefficient management of the ward/department. They will provide professional,clinical, managerial leadership and supervision for the nursing team. Thejobholder is responsible for developing and maintaining a ward ordepartments philosophy that has the patient at the centre of compassionatesafe and quality care delivery. Through managing the administrative andfinancial aspects of the ward, the jobholder will ensure cost effective useof resources.

Asan experienced nurse the jobholder will assist in co-ordinating activities onthe ward or department ensuring effective communication is maintained at alltimes, providing support to qualified and unqualified nurses within theward/dept. He/she will play a key rolein the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation,and evaluation of programmes of care.

Thejobholder will act as a role model, promoting quality evidence-basedpractice, developing the nursing team and ensuring effective management ofthe ward/department.

Therole of the band 7 ward manager is pivotal in the success of the team. Candidates will be expected to demonstrategood leadership qualities, have an ability to motivate team members, haveevidence of supporting change management, as well as excellent interpersonaland communication skills. A commitmentto professional development and the development of the team is essential.

. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OFRESPONSIBILITY

Leadership

Provide leadership to the clinicalteam.

Support and inspire staff toprovide efficient, effective, safe, quality care to patients.

Deliver a positive patientexperience.

Promote the building of effectiveteams and collaboration between teams.

Anticipate problems and takepreventative or mitigating actions or have contingency plans available.

Work with Matron to lead thedevelopment of ward/department nursing practice, reflecting the ClinicalService Unit and Trust business plans.

Work with the Matron and or Head ofNursing to suggest and develop new roles/ways of working.

Delegate and empower staff whilstmaintaining overall, continuing responsibility and accountability.

Line manage the nursing team,including individual and team performance, attendance, management, andworkforce planning.

Ensure the effective deployment ofstaff is mapped against the flow of patients to provide safe and effectivecare.

Support and participate in localand trust wide recruitment events.

Manage the use of bank and agency.

Investigate and respond toaccidents, complaints, untoward incidents and other significant events.

Deliver an effective, safe, qualityservice within budgetary envelope.

Raise and respond to concerns withregards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrongdoing by following the LTHTwhistle blowing policy and supporting processes.

Deputise for Matron in theirabsence.

Clinical

Act in accordance with the Nursingand Midwifery Councils Code: Professional Standards Practice and Behaviour

Supervise ward staff with regardsclinical practice and patient experience to promote the delivery of excellentclinical standards

Provide a visible clinical lead androle model to the nursing and wider team by delivering high qualitycompassionate care as an expert practitioner.

Ensure that documentation standardsare maintained in accordance with NMC and LTHT guidelines, whether written orcomputerised.

Promote and maintain positiveworking relationships between all staff, internal and external to the Trust,involved in the care of patients.

Set, monitor and seek tocontinuously improve standards and the quality of patient care, includingthose standards defined in local and national guidance.

Maintain a safe workingenvironment.

Ensure the safe use and efficientmanagement of equipment and supplies.

Promote compassionateevidence-based practice, wherever possible

Work with Matron to ensure thatclinical governance processes at ward/dept level encompass measures to ensurethe quality of the fundamental and essential aspects of care.

Balance clinical risk and clinicaldecision making against context.

Work with the Infection Preventionand Control Team and Facilities to monitor the environment to maintain andraise standards.

Undertake duties on other wards ordepartments as and when required by the service.

Act in such a way that safeguardsthe health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults at all times. Isfamiliar with and adheres to the LTHT safeguarding policies.

QualityImprovement

Contribute to quality improvementprogrammes as required.

Provides a contextual informationand or viewpoint to support quality improvement by contributing toprofessional conversations representing the ward and or speciality view

Keep up to date with andcommunicate service developments, advances, and research.

Through the use of audit, localresearch, metrics, and feedback continually seek to identify practice thatneeds improvement. Implement and evaluate any resultant improvement plan.

Actively promote patientinvolvement and feedback within service improvements to promote a positivepatient experience.

Maintain and sustain the momentumof improvements until they are firmly embedded into the values and culture ofthe clinical area.

Educationand Training

Participate in personal appraisaland mandatory training at the required time periods.

Ensure all new starters, inclusiveof temporary staff, have a local induction to the clinical area.

Ensure all staff have an individualperformance development plan and a yearly appraisal.

Ensure all nursing staff maintainmandatory and priority training requirement.

Support and facilitatere-validation for registered nursing staff, and self.

Promote a learning and developmentculture to the improve staff skills, knowledge, and competence.

Ensure the induction anddevelopment of staff.

Promote a positive learningenvironment within the clinical area to support the development of knowledgeand skills in learners.

Support and facilitate work-basedinter-professional learning.

Qualifications

* Registered Nurse (RN Adult for adult clinical areas or RN Child for childrens areas) (Level 1 or 2)
* Recognised teaching/assessing qualification
* Degree in Nursing or related subject or equivalent professional experience
* Evidence of effective professional and leadership development
* Evidence of continued professional development. Willing to undergo training as necessary
