Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will lead the management of complex facial trauma and deformities, including TMJ joint replacement and orthognathic surgery, secondary trauma reconstructions, and post‑traumatic deformity corrections. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the appointee will also engage in emergency trauma care, collaborating with other specialties to provide holistic, patient‑centred treatment.
This role combines clinical, academic, and leadership responsibilities, providing the opportunity to participate in teaching, training, and research. The department is fully equipped with state‑of‑the‑art facilities, including advanced 3D planning software and on‑site 3D printing technology, supporting the delivery of cutting‑edge care.
The post‑holder will play a key role in shaping the future of the Trauma, TMJ and Deformity service, contributing to innovative service development and ensuring the Trust’s continued reputation for excellence in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
As part of our commitment to delivering high‑quality care across seven days, this post may involve participation in an out‑of‑hours rota, including evenings, weekends, and/or bank holidays, in accordance with service needs. Any work undertaken outside standard hours/PA’s will attract remuneration in line with the respective NHS Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions of Service.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Duties
* Diagnose and manage a wide range of facial trauma cases, including pan‑facial fractures, complex craniofacial injuries, and soft tissue trauma.
* Provide additional support in leading the surgical correction of congenital and acquired facial deformities, including orthognathic procedures.
* Provide multidisciplinary care, collaborating with orthodontists, plastic surgeons, ENT specialists, neurosurgeons, and radiologists.
* Develop and implement clinical protocols for the management of trauma and TMJ service, enhancing patient care pathways.
* Participate in the on‑call rota (1:5), managing emergency OMFS cases, including trauma and acute infections.
* Deliver outpatient care, including pre‑ and post‑operative consultations, and manage inpatient cases, ensuring a seamless patient journey.
Working for our organisation
UHD are investing, developing and transforming Trust services in line with the New Hospital Programme. As part of this, some services may move site this year or next, either temporarily or permanently.
The Head and Neck ward will move from Poole to Bournemouth Hospital Site in July 2026 and the OMFS team will work cross‑site from this date.
Service relocation may occur; excess mileage will not be reimbursed. Travel from home to the new work base will be classed as a normal commute. Any other changes will be managed under Trust or national terms and conditions.

Qualifications
* Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
* An appropriate higher Surgical qualification
* Special interest in facial deformity and orthognathic
Experience
* High level of clinical experience and competence in OMFS services, including Trauma
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
