A Senior SQL DBA is required for our Government Client who will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance and optimisation of their enterprise database systems Microsoft SQL Server.
This role also supports and administers additional database platforms including PostgreSQL and MySQL to ensure reliability, security, performance and availability across the data environment.
As the Senior SQL DBA you will collaborate closely with their application teams, infrastructure engineers and business stakeholders to deliver efficient and scalable data solutions.
Essential Skills & Experience required
As the Senior SQL DBA you will possess the following:
5 years + experience administering Microsoft SQL Server in production/secure environments
Hands-on expertise with PostgreSQL and MySQL database administration
A strong understanding of T-SQL, SQL query optimisation and database internals.
Duties include:
Install, configure, patch, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL database environments.
Monitor database performance and proactively tune queries, indexes, and server configurations.
Perform routine health checks and ensure high availability and disaster recovery solutions (AlwaysOn, log shipping, replication, clustering).
Manage database backups, recovery strategies, and restore testing across all platforms.
Analyse slow-running queries and optimise performance using execution plans and profiling tools.
Implement indexing strategies, data archiving, and partitioning where appropriate.
Conduct capacity planning and forecasting for growth.
Implement and maintain database security controls including authentication, encryption, auditing, and role-based access.
Ensure compliance with company policies, data governance frameworks, and regulatory standards.
Manage user accounts, roles, privileges, and security auditing.
Database Design & Development
Support developers with database design, schema improvements, stored procedures, functions, and triggers.
Collaborate on data modelling efforts (logical and physical models) for new applications and enhancements.
Assist with ETL processes, data migrations, and integration projects across heterogeneous systems.
Resolve database related incidents, performance issues and service disruptions
Automate routine tasks using PowerShell, Bash, Python or SQL based scripts.
Support cross platform replication, data synchronisation and migration activities between MS SQL, PostgreSQL and MySQL.
