Job Purpose:
As a Workshop Technician in a machine building environment, you will be responsible for assembling, fitting, and testing mechanical systems and components for bespoke or standard machinery. You will work from engineering drawings to build high-quality machines that meet customer specifications and deadlines.
Key Responsibilities:
· Assemble mechanical components for industrial machines according to detailed engineering drawings and schematics.
· Fit and align parts using hand tools, measuring instruments, and assembly jigs.
· Install pneumatic systems, bearings, shafts, and drive mechanisms.
· Ensure machines are built to exact tolerances and quality standards.
· Conduct mechanical testing, fault finding, and adjustments during the build process.
· Work closely with design engineers, electrical fitters, and control engineers to resolve build issues.
· Maintain a clean and safe working environment, following health & safety procedures at all times.
· Record build progress and report any issues or delays to the Workshop Manager.
· Support continuous improvement in build efficiency and quality.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
· Time-served apprenticeship or vocational qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 3) in Mechanical Fitting or Mechanical Engineering is desirable.
· Proven experience as a Mechanical Fitter (or similar) in a machine building, manufacturing, or automation environment.
· Strong understanding of mechanical assemblies, tolerances, and fitting techniques.
· Experience working with pneumatic systems.
· Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
Skills and Competencies:
· High attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
· Strong mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
· Effective problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
· Good teamwork and communication skills.
· Ability to work to tight deadlines and under minimal supervision.
· Familiarity with precision measuring tools (verniers, micrometers, dial indicators).
Work Conditions:
· Workshop-based 40H/Week (Mon-Thurs 07:30 – 16:30 & Fri – 07:30 – 13:30)
· Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary.
· Some lifting, bending, and working in tight spaces may be required.
· Salary depending on experience
Desirable:
· Forklift license.
· Experience TIG Welding
· Previous experience with automation equipment.
· Use of a Lathe or Milling machine.
