JOB SUMMARY:
The City of Birmingham is seeking to hire a Senior Building Custodian to plan, organize, and oversee the work of subordinate personnel engaged in a variety of cleaning tasks performed in and around several public buildings. The Senior Building Custodian will clean and maintain areas such as floors, stairwells, toilets, and sinks using equipment such as brooms, mops, vacuums, buffers, and chemicals used for cleaning and disinfecting. The Senior Building Custodian plans and carries out their assignments, resolves most of the conflicts that arise, coordinates the work with others, and interprets policy on their own initiative in terms of established objectives. Work assignments are received through work orders and verbally. The Senior Building Custodian will keep the supervisor informed on the progress of assigned tasks. Senior Building Custodian is distinguished from the Building Custodian job class by the number of buildings and facilities assigned. The Senior Building Custodian usually has two or more buildings, with each building also having a Building Custodian assigned to it.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
1. Driver's license.
2. Experience cleaning buildings in a commercial setting such as a business, office spaces, warehouses, or other indoor areas.
3. Experience using and storing general and commercial cleaning products.
4. Experience managing inventory to ensure adequate supplies for operation.
5. Experience operating floor cleaning equipment such as a buffer, carpet cleaner, vacuum, etc.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by the City of Birmingham. These qualifications may be considered by the hiring agency when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.
6. Supervisory experience.
7. Experience using basic office equipment (e.g., computer, phone, copier).
8. Experience performing routine maintenance activities by making minor repairs such as replacing bulbs, repairing furniture and moving furniture in order to ensure the safe operation of the facility.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
9. Cleans bathrooms using a variety of cleaning chemicals and equipment to keep the restrooms clean and sanitary for the employees and visitors.
10. Maintains building appearance by cleaning building areas using cleaning supplies and equipment to keep the building in a clean and orderly condition.
11. Cleans floors and stairwells using brooms, mops, vacuums, buffers, and other cleaning supplies and equipment in order to maintain the cleanliness of the facility.
12. Performs routine maintenance activities by making minor repairs such as replacing bulbs, repairing furniture and moving furniture in order to ensure the safe operation of the facility.
13. Manages stockroom supplies and equipment by monitoring, storing, and issuing supplies and equipment needed to clean and maintain the facility.
14. Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed within employer-owned facilities such as offices, workshops, warehouses, or stations. Work involves use of various cleaning equipment such as vacuums, mops, brooms, and buffers. Work requires regular exposure to chemicals used in cleaning and disinfecting floors, toilets, sinks, and other surfaces.
