Job Description
37.5 Hours per week. Monday- Friday between 7am-5pm (flexible depending on hospital opening times and accessibility to sampling points) some early starts.
Purpose of the post:
The Field Service Technician performs on-site water sampling, cleanroom monitoring, and coordinating sample logistics across hospitals, laboratories, and partner facilities. This role ensures accurate data collection, timely sample delivery, and excellent customer communication while adhering to strict regulatory and safety standards. The role will include daily travel to our client sites. Based at Sheffield when working in the office.
Water Sampling & Cleanroom Monitoring
1. Conduct water sampling at hospitals and healthcare facilities following established protocols and regulatory requirements.
2. Perform cleanroom environmental monitoring, including air, surface, and particle assessments, using approved equipment and aseptic techniques.
3. Ensure all sampling activities maintain sample integrity, sterility, and proper chain-of-custody documentation.
4. Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot field equipment used for sampling and monitoring.
Sample Transport & Logistics
5. Deliver collected samples to designated drop-off points, Sheffield laboratory, or sister laboratories within required stability times.
6. Maintain temperature control and secure handling during transport.
7. Track sample movement and ensure accurate documentation from collection through to receipt at the laboratory.
8. Liaise with Logistics, Client liaison, Stores and the laboratory when needed, including verifying paperwork and unloading Orange boxes
Scheduling & Coordination
9. Schedule routine and ad-hoc sampling visits with hospitals, cleanroom operators, and other customer sites.
10. Coordinate testing timelines with laboratory teams to ensure efficient processing.
11. Adjust schedules proactively in response to urgent requests, access limitations, or operational changes.
Customer Liaison & Communication
12. Serve as the primary on-site contact for customers during sampling and monitoring visits.
13. Communicate clearly about sampling requirements, timelines, and any deviations or issues encountered.
14. Provide guidance on preparation steps customers must take before sampling or monitoring.
15. Build strong professional relationships to support customer satisfaction and retention.
Qualifications
16. Experience working in a microbiology laboratory
17. Familiarity with traceability processes and regulatory compliance.
18. Ability to follow detailed procedures and maintain precise documentation.
19. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
20. Basic proficiency with mobile apps, tablets, or computers for logging samples and completing reports.
21. Strong communication and customer-facing skills.
22. Comfortable working independently, traveling frequently, and managing a dynamic schedule.
23. Strong organisational and time-management abilities.
24. Professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail
25. Experience working in a microbiology laboratory
26. Experience in environmental sampling, cleanroom monitoring, healthcare environments, or laboratory operations is an advantage.
