Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist

The closing date is 31 May 2026.

We are looking for a qualified Occupational Therapist with significant post graduate NHS experience to lead clinical OT practice across a range of patients and care settings in one of the UK's largest hospital Trusts. The role is based in the Specialised Medicine Therapy team across Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Weston Park Hospital.

As a Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist you will work alongside a team of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, and support staff to deliver high quality care using quality improvement and evidence‑based healthcare. Your work will include early assessment, re‑enablement and discharge planning, cognitive and functional assessment and interventions across diverse wards such as Oncology, Haematology, Urology and Infectious Diseases.


Main duties

* Provide specialist OT assessment and intervention for a complex, diverse patient mix.
* Lead and participate in quality improvement, evidence‑based practice and clinical governance activities.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for discharge planning and service delivery.
* Supervise and mentor therapy staff, including teaching, training and appraisal.
* Organise service delivery and, where required, contribute to 7‑day rosters.
* Participate in clinical audit, teaching, and research activities.


Qualifications

* BSc in Occupational Therapy.
* Current HCPC registration.
* Post‑graduate Masters level module or equivalent experience.


Experience

* Extensive experience as a qualified OT within the NHS.
* Significant specialist level experience in a relevant specialty.
* Demonstrated clinical educator role and participation in clinical audit / practice development.
* Supervision and line‑management experience, including appraisal.
* Experience in on‑call, weekend and emergency respiratory roles (PT only).
* Member of relevant professional interest groups and governance activities.


Further training and skills

* Evidence of continuous personal and professional development.
* Advanced clinical knowledge and skill in specialty.
* Knowledge of evidence‑base for specialty, and basic knowledge of medicine, orthopaedics, neurology therapies.
* NVQ assessor, clinical governance, research, audit or practice experience.
* Excellent team‑working, interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.
* Organisation and prioritisation abilities, able to act on own initiative.
* Analytical problem‑solving and change‑implementation capability.
* Confident working with senior professionals and maintaining confidentiality.
* IT literacy and understanding of stress management.


Other factors

* Flexible and reliable approach to working practices.
* Mature positive attitude to change management.
* Proactive service delivery approach.


Employment terms

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed‑term contract basis for a period of nine months due to maternity leave of the substantive post holder. The contract will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed‑term contracts and statutory maternity provisions. Existing NHS staff will only be considered on a secondment basis, subject to agreement with their current line manager.

Salary: £49,387 to £56,515 per year (pro rata for part‑time staff).

This post requires a Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 Disclosure and Barring Service check.
