Publishing Director, The Lancet

About the role
We’re looking for an experienced individual to serve as Publishing Director for a portfolio of broad‑scope hybrid and open access journals within The Lancet Group. The role combines strategic oversight, commercial leadership and people management, with a strong focus on supporting Editors‑in‑Chief and driving sustainable growth.
Responsibilities
* Lead portfolio and journal business management, including revenue and content development strategies and plans aligned with market trends and customer needs. Coach Editor‑in‑Chiefs and translate growth opportunities into new and existing journal products, services and revenues.
* Oversee content development across the Open Access and hybrid titles, collaborating with editors to innovate content formats, extensions and distribution channels.
* Build and maintain relationships with editors, authors, key opinion leaders, advisory boards and external stakeholders, and lead complex industry discussions with universities, research institutions and government partners.
* Contribute to The Lancet Group’s future plans, including development of new and existing journals, expansion of open access and hybrid programmes, and overall business success.
* Develop and nurture strategic relationships with Elsevier stakeholders and counterparts across related areas to promote business success.
* Lead, engage and develop a global team, driving talent growth, employee engagement and performance in a matrixed environment.
Requirements
* Significant experience in scholarly or scientific publishing, with a strong track record in journal or portfolio leadership and achieving business objectives.
* Strong strategic and commercial acumen, with the ability to set direction, identify growth opportunities and translate strategy into sustainable results.
* Deep understanding of the evolving publishing landscape, including open access and hybrid models and their implications for journals, authors and institutions.
* Proven experience working with senior academic, research or clinical stakeholders, including Editors‑in‑Chief and external opinion leaders.
* Demonstrated leadership and people‑management capability, developing, motivating and inspiring teams in complex or matrixed environments.
* Excellent communication and influencing skills, building trusted relationships and leading effectively across diverse stakeholders.
* Undergraduate degree in a scientific area relevant to The Lancet.
* At least 10 years’ publishing experience.
