Safeguarding Training Officer
Employer: Sheffield Diocesan Board of Finance (Diocese of Sheffield)
Location: Diocesan Church House, Rotherham (hybrid, with working from home available)
Employment: Full time (35 hours per week) or part‑time sharing (including evenings and weekends). Salary £36,000‑£42,500, 10% pension contribution, generous holiday entitlement.
Reports to: Head of Safeguarding (Diocesan Safeguarding Officer)
Main Purpose of the Role
To contribute to the development and implementation of the diocesan safeguarding training strategy in line with national Church of England guidance, delivering safeguarding training to office holders, employees and volunteers within the Diocese of Sheffield.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
* Lead the implementation of the Safeguarding Learning and Development Practice Guidance.
* Organise and deliver a rolling programme of safeguarding training (face‑to‑face or virtual) to office holders, employees and volunteers.
* Maintain accurate records of training undertaken.
* Lead a network of volunteer trainers to deliver basic safeguarding training to parish volunteers.
* Provide monthly reports to the DSO and support reporting to the senior staff team.
* Attend and report to quarterly meetings of the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel.
* Network and liaise with safeguarding teams in other dioceses to share best practice.
* Attend national and regional network events as required and keep up to date with the latest guidance.
* Answer safeguarding queries from parishes, including handling potential disclosures.
* Manage safeguarding dashboards and hubs, promoting their use across all parishes.
* Provide ongoing support to the PSO network through training and networking opportunities.
* Undertake other duties from time to time as required.
Person Specification
1. Qualifications
o Relevant professional qualification or equivalent (e.g., social work, education, health, police or children/youth work).
o Training qualification.
2. Experience
o Facilitating and delivering training.
o Working or volunteering in a safeguarding role.
o Developing a training strategy.
o Delivering safeguarding training.
o Working with volunteers in a church or other setting.
o Supporting victims and survivors of abuse and handling disclosures.
3. Skills & Knowledge
o Understanding of current safeguarding legislation and Disclosure and Barring Service.
o Excellent presentation, interpersonal and organisational skills.
o Good IT skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, Teams).
o Ability to maintain confidentiality, especially in safeguarding matters.
o Knowledge of legal frameworks relating to safeguarding.
o Understanding of Church of England culture.
4. Personal Qualities
o Commitment to the aims and ethos of the Diocese of Sheffield.
o Own transport or ability to travel throughout the diocese.
o Willingness to work flexibly, including evenings and weekends.
o Sympathetic, professional understanding of the Christian faith.
