About the Borough
This special place in South West London between the capital and the countryside has been a Royal borough longer than anywhere else, and it is where the first kings of England were crowned.
Today, it is a vibrant and diverse borough with a rich history and strong cultural and community heritage. Kingston's riverside location, excellent retail options, historic marketplace and church, parks, and gardens all contribute to the vibrancy of Kingston town centre. Each of our district centres—Surbiton, New Malden, Tolworth, and Chessington—offers something unique.
Situated in Zone 6, Kingston is among the best-connected town centres in London, with direct train links from Kingston and Surbiton stations to Clapham Junction, London Waterloo, and Wimbledon for interchange with the London Underground and Tramlink.
Kingston’s residents are innovative and entrepreneurial, with a strong community pride. The borough has a longstanding history of industry and creativity, reflected in assets such as the Rose Theatre, the International Youth Arts Festival, and Kingston University, which has more graduate business start-ups than any other institution.
Our communities have shown tremendous generosity and compassion, especially in response to COVID-19, demonstrating Kingston’s key strength. The council provides strong support to vulnerable groups and those needing additional assistance, a focus that has intensified during the pandemic. As the population ages, we are working to help residents maintain independence and improve the cost-effectiveness of our services to meet rising demand.
Kingston is home to diverse cultures and backgrounds, fostering a rich community spirit. Notably, it has a large Sri Lankan Tamil community and more residents from Korea than any other UK location.
