Job Description
A Master has overall command of the Vessel once they have completed the Change of Command procedure with the outgoing Master. They are then authorized to perform acts necessary for the safe, efficient, and proper operation of the vessel.
The Master’s primary considerations are the safety of life, the safety of the vessel, and the prevention of pollution. These considerations override all other obligations, including schedule, expense, or convenience. In matters of safety, the Master has authority to take whatever actions they consider necessary. They should not hesitate to request management assistance or support, with the Duty Officer being the first point of contact.
In addition to statutory duties, particular responsibilities include:
* Ensuring familiarity with the Fleet Regulations and other documents comprising the Ferry Services Safety Management System;
* Ensuring all crew are aware of and understand these documents;
* Ensuring crew are aware of risk assessments;
* Establishing onboard procedures to implement safety and policy requirements;
* Ensuring the vessel is correctly crewed, liaising with the Route / Senior Master, and arranging cover in emergencies.

* Permanent Full Time post for 157.5 hours/month, working a 2-week on, 2-week off shift pattern

* You must be able to travel throughout Shetland at short notice, with limited public transport
