Overview

This is an opportunity for a technically minded individual to apply fluid flow and heat transfer principles to the development of next‑generation thermal energy devices. Based within the University of Sheffield AMRC Design & Prototyping Group, you will support a team recognised for its work in engineering design and industrial research.

In this role, you will use your simulation experience to provide technical support for thermal analysis projects. You will be responsible for performing calculations and developing solutions to heat‑transfer problems using hand calculations, CFD and FEA tools, contributing to the group’s overall research output and reputation for high‑quality computational analysis.

For this role, you will need effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate with all staff members in a diverse team. You should be able to manage and prioritise your work to meet project deadlines, solve problems in a variety of situations and have a willingness to learn.

This role is a fixed‑term, 12‑month placement under which you will engage in on‑ and off‑the‑job learning and development activities. For the duration of the post, you will be supervised and mentored by a senior engineer from the Digital Design team. Through the interactions with the DPG project teams, you will work on providing solutions to a diverse range of engineering challenges.


Main duties and responsibilities

* Assist the Design team by performing hand calculations for design and checking of results.
* Use CFD and FEA packages to evaluate thermal conditions.
* Learn analysis software tools for thermal analysis.
* Attend training courses as required.
* Self‑learning on the latest forms of thermal analysis.
* Work on ideas and concepts as part of a team, generating innovative solutions to design problems.
* Present work and discuss technical issues with team members and project partners.
* Research, collate, organise and edit material, including technical reports for inclusion in presentations and other documents.
* Work within the AMRC Quality Management Systems.
* Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

* Knowledge/experience in CFD calculations – Essential (Application/interview)
* Good understanding of fluid flow physics and calculations – Essential (Application)
