Podiatry Assistant

Main duties of the job
* Provide delegated podiatric/foot care to patients, including care of nails using appropriate podiatric equipment and post‑operative nail dressings for at‑risk patients.
* Assist with vascular assessments, which may involve the use of specialist equipment.
* Provide basic wound care for high‑risk or acute patients under the supervision of a podiatrist using a wound‑care app to record consultations.
* Prepare and assist the podiatrist during specialist treatments such as nail surgery.
* Renew palliative and functional insoles or silicone devices previously prescribed by a podiatrist.
* Provide support to registered podiatrists in high‑risk clinics.
* When indicated, refer patients to the podiatrist for more specialist treatment.
* Work in a variety of clinics, residential care homes, and patients’ own homes.
* Maintain a level of clinical stock at main clinics.
* Care for instruments and equipment in line with departmental and Trust guidelines.
* Maintain accurate patient records in line with departmental guidelines and Trust policy.
* Input data for new and existing patients on the electronic health record and update patients’ details.
* Maintain an efficient filing system and store patient records in accordance with the Trust policy on confidentiality.
* Deliver health education talks to individuals and groups of patients, carers and health‑care professionals if delegated by the podiatrist.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Care Certificate or the willingness and ability to undertake (applicable for all non‑registered support workers that provide health care).
* GCSE English or equivalent at grade C or above.
* Undertaking or willingness to complete a recognised Podiatry Assistant qualification or NVQ based equivalent.
* Understanding of clinical governance.
Knowledge and Experience
* Experience is not essential.
* Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the needs of individual service users, their relatives and carers.
* Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
* Experience of working in a team.
* Experience of working as a podiatry assistant or other NHS setting.
* Experience of booking appointments on a computer system e.g. EMiS web.
* Basic computer knowledge.
* Experience of working with people with disability.
Skills and Aptitudes
* Ability to communicate (written, verbal and non‑verbal) with a variety of people, including those with communication difficulties.
* Ability to be calm under pressure, and to treat distressed or possibly abusive patients.
* Manual dexterity and good hand/eye coordination.
* Ability to work unsupervised, and as part of a team.
* Ability to prioritise own workload, and rearrange appointments where necessary.
* Ability and willingness to attend training events.
Personal Circumstances
* Ability to travel to various sites within North Cumbria e.g. clinics, hospitals, residential homes and patients’ own homes.
Other Requirements
* Act in ways that support equality and value diversity (Level 1).
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
The cost of the DBS must be met by the successful candidate(s) through salary deduction. DBS charges are as follows:
Standard Check: £21.50 + Administration cost of £6.50 = £28.00 – deducted from salary over a 4 month period or a one‑off payment.
Enhanced Check: £49.50 + administration cost of £6.50 = £56.00 – deducted from salary over a 4 month period or a one‑off payment.
