Consultant Colorectal/General Surgeon

The closing date is 16 May 2025

Applications are invited forthe posts of Consultant General Surgeon with a dedicated speciality interest inColorectal Surgery.

The postholders will join theexisting surgical team within the Directorate of General Surgery deliveringcare across South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and there willbe a requirement to work across both sites.

Each post is full-timecomprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs).

Main duties of the job

The post holders will join theexisting team of 18 General Surgeons providing emergency General Surgery andpossess specialist skills in Colorectal Surgery. Emergency work would be on a 1:6basis, comprising a combination of 24 hour on call at South Tyneside DistrictHospital and a separate day and night 12-hour service provision at SunderlandRoyal Hospital.

Overall responsibilities of therole include the co-ordination and delivery of strategic and operationalaspects of General Surgery Services across South Tyneside and Sunderland andthe wider sub-regional catchment area.These will reflect National and Local priorities including the strategicdirection of the Trust and the Directorate of General Surgery.

Post holders are expected topossess Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and be on the GMCSpecialist Register at the time of taking up the post.

The post holders will have excellent team working skills, aflexible approach to service delivery and service improvement and an enquiring,critical approach.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will join a team of 18General Surgeons providing emergency generalsurgery, as well as possessing specialist skills in Lower GI and colorectal cancer surgery. Emergency workwould be on a 1:6 basis, comprising a combination of 24 hour on call at SouthTyneside District Hospital and a separate day and night 12-hour serviceprovision at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

The post will have commitments across theST and SRH sites for both elective and emergency care. Flexibility in jobplanning will be required to facilitate the use of General surgical allocatedtheatres. On that basis theatre sessions will be worked flexibly picking updropped sessions from other consultants. Other weekly commitments will includethe colorectal MDT at SRH, an endoscopy list, and 2 outpatient clinicsincluding 2WW referrals, new colorectal referrals and general surgicalreferrals.

Overall responsibilities include theco-ordination and delivery of the strategic and operational aspects of theGeneral Surgery Services across South Tyneside and Sunderland and the widersub-regional catchment area. These willreflect National and Local priorities including the strategic direction for theTrust and the Directorate of General Surgery.

Person Specification


Teaching and Education

* Experience of supervising junior medical staff
* Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
* Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills
* Qualification in medical education


Personal Attributes

Qualifications

* Primary medical qualification
* Full GMC registration
* FRCS
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the AAC [there is flexibility with the 6-month period with Executive Medical Director approval]
* Post CCT
* Hold a higher degree
* Post graduate Certificate in an appropriate surgical field


Audit and Research

* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice
* Involvement in quality improvement measures
* Ability to undertake multi-disciplinary audit / audit in specialty area
* Experience of clinical research
* Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals


Specialist Skills

* Competence in managing Emergency General surgery on call.
* Laparoscopic skills & experience including level 4 competence of colorectal surgery procedures.
* Competent diagnostic skills in colonoscopy with JAG accreditation
* Good interpersonal skills
* Ability to communicate effectively with patients and staff
* Ability to develop and progress a research project and audit
* Ability to run training courses
* Papers presented at regional/ national meetings
* Research methodology knowledge/experience
* Subspecialty interest


Experience

* Undergone surgical training with CCT in colorectal surgery (or equivalent)
* Evidence of independent performance to the level of a day 1 consultant in Emergency General Surgery
* Evidence of independent performance to the level of a day 1 consultant for Elective colorectal resections
* Evidence of current professional development
* Competent independent General Surgical practice
* Understanding of the NHS, Clinical Governance process and resource issues
* Evidence of organisational, management and time management skills
* Experience of Training & Teaching Surgical trainees
* Evidence of management and administration experience and understanding management goals
* Management course and / or certificate
