We are seeking a proactive and technically capable Geotechnical Engineer to join our team and provide geotechnical and earthworks expertise across tendering, site operations and regulatory compliance.
About the Role
The Geotechnical Engineer will support projects from pre-construction through to completion, ensuring earthworks and ground-related activities are delivered safely, efficiently and in compliance with specifications, legislation and best practice.
You will work closely with estimating, site and commercial teams, providing technical input, managing site investigations, monitoring earthworks quality and supporting environmental and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
* Review and interpret site investigation reports and ground data.
* Assess geotechnical risks, constraints and opportunities at tender stage.
* Calculate earthworks volumes, cut/fill analysis and mass haul balances.
* Provide technical input on earthworks methodology, plant selection and programme.
* Identify requirements for additional site investigations where required.
Site Investigation & Technical Support
* Plan, coordinate and supervise site investigation works including boreholes and trial pits.
* Log soils and rocks in accordance with BS 5930.
* Manage soil and rock sampling and liaison with testing laboratories.
* Interpret results and contribute to factual and interpretive reports.
Earthworks Monitoring & Quality Assurance
* Monitor earthworks to ensure compliance with specifications and design.
* Coordinate and review compaction testing, CBRs, moisture content and compliance testing.
* Support site teams to maximise reuse of materials and improve earthworks efficiency.
* Manage inspection and test plans and compliance records.
Environmental & Regulatory Compliance
* Prepare and maintain Surface Water Management Plans.
* Monitor surface and groundwater controls.
* Liaise with SEPA, local authorities and regulators.
* Support waste management compliance and environmental permitting.
* Promote innovative, compliant and sustainable earthworks solutions.
Documentation & Reporting
* Prepare Earthworks Plans, Method Statements and Mass Haul Diagrams.
* Produce as-built records, compliance packs and technical reports.
* Maintain document control, logs and geotechnical databases.
* Attend internal and external technical and progress meetings.
* Degree or HND in Geology, Engineering Geology or related discipline.
* Minimum 3 years’ experience in a geotechnical or civil engineering role.
* Strong understanding of earthworks, ground conditions and site operations.
* Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
* Full UK driving licence.
* CSCS Card.
* Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
* Working towards Chartered status (CGeol or similar).
* Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D and earthworks software.
* Knowledge of CDM Regulations.
* SSSTS or SMSTS certification.
* Understanding of ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 standards.
