With over 600 staff, four main campuses, and an annual turnover of £60 million, Newham College is one of the borough’s largest employers and plays a key role in driving local economic and community development.

About The Role

We are looking to appoint a dedicated Mental Health Adviser to join our growing Student Experience team at Newham College London. This role will be central to ensuring that all students – both young people and adult learners – have equitable access to high‑quality, effective mental health support. Working term‑time only across our campuses, the Mental Health Adviser will deliver 1:1 and group support to students with mental health challenges, manage a caseload with supervision, and work closely with other departments including Safeguarding, Counselling, Inclusive Learning, and Welfare.

You will also play a vital role in raising awareness of mental health issues and contributing to the college’s wider mental health strategy and wellbeing agenda.

Key responsibilities

* Deliver individual sessions and group interventions to support students experiencing mental health difficulties.
* Manage a caseload of students and contribute to their academic and personal progress.
* Work with students presenting challenging behaviours or those at risk of underachieving due to poor mental health.
* Collaborate with internal support teams, including Safeguarding, Inclusive Learning and tutorial staff.
* Maintain accurate and confidential records using systems such as CPOMS and E‑Tracker.
* Refer students internally and externally as appropriate, including contributing to multi‑agency meetings.
* Support mental health awareness events, enrichment activities, and proactive campaigns across the college.
* Provide advice and training to staff to support an inclusive learning environment.
* Stay up to date with best practice and developments in mental health policy and student support.
* Promote and uphold the student code of conduct in shared college spaces.

Ideal candidate – Essential qualifications, skills and experience

* Professional qualifications or relevant experience within a Mental Health field.
* Experience supporting young people and/or adult learners with mental health and wellbeing needs.
* Knowledge of safeguarding and experience working with vulnerable individuals.
* Openness, patience, empathy, and a non‑judgmental approach to working with diverse learners.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Ability to manage caseloads, prioritise under pressure, and work flexibly and independently.
* Strong digital literacy and confident record‑keeping.
* A sound understanding of confidentiality and ethical practice.
* Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and to promoting a safe and supportive learning environment.

Desirable

* Experience working in an educational setting.
* Degree in a relevant subject or ongoing professional development.
