Special School Nurse
Take your nursing career in a new direction with our award‑winning Special School Nursing Team. This role provides expertise across nine schools in Hampshire, Portsmouth, Southampton and the Isle of Wight, delivering hands‑on care, medicines management, training school staff and leading clinical decisions.
Main duties of the job
* Meet the needs of patients and families to achieve improved health outcomes, promoting health, wellbeing and independence.
* Develop and maintain a culture of service improvement, promoting quality and safety.
* Practice in accordance with the NMC code, prioritising people, practising effectively, preserving safety and promoting professionalism and trust.
Key responsibilities
The role includes, but is not limited to, the following:
* Deliver therapy for children and young people with complex health needs, including epilepsy management, enteral feeding and respiratory care.
* Carry out medicines management, clinical assessments and care planning, and safeguarding.
* Train and support school staff and multidisciplinary teams.
* Provide clinical leadership, delegate and make decisions, and progress your own career through CPD funding and supervisory responsibilities.
* Possibly serve as a link nurse within a specialist area of interest.
Qualifications
* BSc Nursing or RN in Child or Learning Disability Nursing, currently registered with the NMC.
* Practice assessor/supervisor and teaching qualification (e.g. ENB 998 or equivalent).
Experience
* Developing and delivering patient care plans.
* Working in MDT settings.
* Teaching, training, and supervising or assessing junior staff and students.
* Evidence of recent CPD.
Additional criteria
* Clinically competent at Band 5 level.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Work autonomously, prioritise workload and manage tasks – rather than being supervised.
* Dexterity for intravenous and intramuscular injections, catheter insertion, syringe driver set‑up, suture removal and wound management.
* Use of clinical judgement to evaluate patient condition and progress.
* Ability to work as part of a team and support the development of others.
* Adaptability to change and manage unpleasant working conditions such as bodily fluids.
* Understanding of health needs and health promotion for those in care.
* Knowledge of a range of clinical approaches and current professional nursing issues.
* Ability to work with children and vulnerable adults.
* Ability to travel for meetings across Southampton, Portsmouth and Hampshire.
* Valid full driving licence to work where required.
Benefits and working pattern
Salary: £32,073 to £39,043 per year (pro‑rata for part‑time hours). Permanent contract, part‑time (22.5 hours per week) based in Southampton area. Flexible working options available.
