Purpose of the Role:

To deliver high-quality A-Level teaching in Chemistry fostering academic excellence, scientific curiosity, and preparing students for further education and careers in science and related fields.

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching & Learning

* Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging A-Level Chemistry lessons in line with curriculum and exam board specifications.
* Differentiate teaching methods and resources to meet the needs of students with varying abilities.
* Incorporate practical laboratory work to support theoretical knowledge and scientific enquiry.
* Assess, record, and report on students' progress, providing regular feedback and support for improvement.

Student Support & Progress

* Monitor student performance, attendance, and behaviour, intervening where necessary to ensure progress.
* Support students in developing strong scientific, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
* Provide guidance for university applications, particularly for science, medicine, engineering, and related pathways.
* Contribute to the academic and pastoral development of students.

Professional Responsibilities

* Contribute to departmental planning, curriculum development, and resource creation.
* Participate in staff meetings, CPD, and training to enhance teaching practice.
* Maintain high standards of safeguarding, welfare, and equality for all students.
* Communicate effectively with parents/guardians, colleagues, and stakeholders.
* Support enrichment activities, science clubs, trips, or events that enhance learning.

Person Specification – A-Level Chemistry Teacher

Qualifications & Training

* Degree in Chemistry or a closely related subject – essential.
* Recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, QTS, or equivalent) – essential.
* Evidence of continued professional development – desirable.
* Safeguarding and child protection training (or willingness to undertake) – essential.

Experience

* Experience of teaching Chemistry at A-Level or equivalent post-16 setting – essential.
* Experience in preparing students for public examinations – essential.
* Experience in delivering practical laboratory-based teaching – essential.
* Experience in pastoral care and supporting student wellbeing – desirable.

Knowledge & Skills

* Strong subject knowledge in Chemistry and related sciences.
* Familiarity with A-Level exam board specifications and assessment frameworks.
* Ability to motivate, challenge, and inspire post-16 learners.
* Effective classroom and laboratory management skills.
* Strong organisational, time-management, and communication skills.
* Ability to use ICT effectively to support teaching and learning.
* Awareness of safeguarding, equality, and diversity in education.
