Job Description

Hays are working with a welcoming and inclusive primary school in Bolton, known for its strong community ethos and richly diverse pupil population. The school is committed to providing a nurturing environment where every child is supported to succeed both academically and emotionally.

The roleWe are seeking an experienced Teaching Assistant to take on a 1:1 support role in Year 1, working with a non-verbal pupil who presents with challenging behaviour.This is a full-time, long-term supply position starting in September 2026 and continuing for the full academic year.The role requires a confident, resilient and compassionate individual who has experience supporting children with complex needs and is able to build strong, trusting relationships.

Key responsibilities

* Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a pupil with additional needs
* Support communication using appropriate strategies (e.g. visual aids, PECS or similar approaches)
* Manage and respond to challenging behaviour in a calm, consistent and positive manner
* Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and external professionals
* Help the pupil access learning in a way that meets their individual needs
* Implement behaviour strategies and individual support plans
* Foster a safe, structured and supportive learning environment
* Promote the child's social and emotional development

Requirements

* Proven experience working with children with additional needs (essential)
* Experience supporting non-verbal pupils and/or children with challenging behaviour
* Strong understanding of behaviour management strategies
* Knowledge of SEND practices and communication support methods (desirable)
* Patient, resilient and nurturing approach
* Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to pupils' needs
* Strong teamwork and communication skills
