Job Summary
An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a registered Pharmacy Technician to join Fortuneswell Pharmacy as the Dispensary Manager. Fortuneswell Pharmacy is a wholly owned subsidiary outpatient pharmacy located next to the Fortuneswell Chemotherapy Unit at Dorset County Hospital. We recently completed a major refurbishment programme and are looking to extend our high level of service to the rest of the hospital’s outpatients, including a home delivery service to patients across Dorset.
Salary is negotiable based on experience and will include an annual performance‑related bonus.
Main Duties
The role involves overseeing the day‑to‑day management and ongoing development of the outpatient dispensing service. The successful candidate will manage a high‑quality dispensary, ensuring safe, accurate and efficient service, and will supervise staff, coordinate workflow, and develop and deliver training. Additionally, the post holder will undertake final accuracy checking of dispensed medication as an Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) and will lead quality improvement initiatives.

Job Responsibilities
* Manage a high‑quality dispensary to ensure a safe, accurate and efficient service using staff skills and resources.
* Contribute to the management and development of the outpatient pharmacy service by promoting innovation and streamlined working practices and implementing agreed changes.
* Coordinate dispensary processes and workflow, collaborating with pharmacy staff to meet clinical and operational needs.
* Monitor dispensary performance using the Prescription Tracking System and direct workflow to meet agreed targets.
* Develop and implement change in dispensary services when necessary.
* Coordinate and provide training to pharmacy team members and keep training records up to date.
* Ensure good working practices and procedures are in place, adhered to and regularly updated in accordance with legislation and local policy.
* Assist in the control, supply and denaturing of controlled drugs.
* Develop a programme of Accuracy Checking for Dispensing Assistants.
* Maintain appropriate stock control records.
* Receive and issue work, handling prescription payments according to SOPs.
* Investigate and resolve customer complaints and enquiries.
* Monitor dispensing errors and near‑miss data to identify trends and develop SOPs and staff training to prevent further errors.
* Stay informed of current national issues concerning technician development and legislation.
* Perform other duties appropriate to the grade at the request of the relevant manager.
Person Specification
Essential Knowledge & Experience
* Significant experience as a pharmacy technician at Band 5 or above.
* Experience working in and managing/supporting a dispensary environment.
* Experience managing and supervising staff, including direction of work, prioritisation skills and feedback.
* In‑depth understanding of formulary and medicines management issues and their implications for dispensary services.
* Good knowledge of therapeutic drug use in clinical situations.
* Comprehensive understanding of JAC Pharmacy Systems, stock management and electronic prescribing.
* Thorough understanding of the legislation, procedures and protocols surrounding clinical trials and unlicensed medicines.
* Comprehensive knowledge of the legal requirements (law and ethics) for dispensing and supplying medicines, including controlled drugs and over‑the‑counter sales.
* Comprehensive knowledge of health and safety issues and their implications for staff, including COSHH.
Essential Education & Qualification
* Level 3 qualification in Pharmacy Services or equivalent.
* Registered Technician with GPhC.
* Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) status.
* Practice Supervisor Qualification.
* Level 3 Management certificate or equivalent leadership qualification.
Essential Skills & Abilities
* Demonstrated ability to check prescriptions independently.
* Knowledge of the legal aspects of technician checking and prescribing law.
* Good and broad understanding of pharmacy practice to support and advise staff.
* Demonstrated ability to work methodically and accurately.
* Able to analyse and interpret prescriptions, identify problems and decide on appropriate actions.
* Ability to work under minimum supervision.
* Initiative to plan and organise straightforward activities, adjusting plans and priorities as required.
* Excellent spoken and written English language skills.
* Computer literacy and keyboard skills.
* Ability to work flexibly within a team and to supervise, motivate and direct a team.
