JOB DESCRIPTION: SCHOOL NURSE
Position: School Nurse
Reporting to: Head Teacher
Hours: Full-time (term-time plus INSET days)
About the Role
We are looking for a dedicated and experienced Registered Nurse to provide comprehensive healthcare services to our diverse school community of pupils aged 2-20, including residential boarders. You will be the first point of contact for all health-related matters, working independently while collaborating closely with teaching staff, parents, and external healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Health Management
* Provide first aid and acute care for injuries and illnesses across all age groups
* Administer medications and maintain accurate records in accordance with safeguarding and data protection policies
* Manage chronic health conditions (asthma, diabetes, allergies, etc.) and develop individual healthcare plans
* Coordinate care for boarders, including evening and weekend health needs
* Conduct health assessments for new pupils and maintain comprehensive health records
Health Promotion & Education
* Deliver age-appropriate health education sessions on topics including hygiene, nutrition, mental health, and puberty
* Promote healthy lifestyles and wellbeing across the school community
* Support PSHE curriculum delivery where appropriate
Safeguarding & Pastoral Support
* Act as a key safeguarding contact, identifying and responding to child protection concerns
* Provide emotional support and signpost pupils to appropriate mental health services
* Work closely with the pastoral team to support vulnerable students
Administrative & Compliance
* Maintain accurate medical records and ensure confidentiality at all times
* Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, infection control procedures, and NMC standards
* Liaise with parents, GPs, and external health services as required
* Manage the school's medical supplies and equipment
* Contribute to policy development and health-related procedures
Boarding Duties
* Provide healthcare cover for boarding pupils, including participation in on-call rota
* Support the wellbeing of boarders and manage homesickness or adjustment difficulties
Person Specification
Essential
* Current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse (RN)
* Experience working with children and young people
* Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
* Excellent communication skills with children, parents, and colleagues
* Understanding of safeguarding principles and procedures
* Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
* Flexibility to work occasional evenings/weekends for boarding coverage
Desirable
* Post-registration qualification in school nursing or pediatric care
* Experience in a school or educational setting
* First aid and emergency care training
* Knowledge of SEND and mental health first aid
* Experience supporting boarders
