Overview
As a Level 3 Apprentice Field Service Engineer - Electrical (Wastewater), you'll learn how to:
* Install, repair and maintain electrical equipment, and refurbish or replace Wastewater assets to keep services running smoothly for customers.
* Work as part of a dedicated team focused on ensuring plants operate at maximum efficiency.
* Work with a wide range of equipment, identify faults and carry out routine maintenance, following health and safety standards.
* Schedule maintenance activity and organise workload in line with water industry standards and regulatory requirements.
* Plan maintenance work with consideration for process safety, risk assessments, environmental impact and water treatment or wastewater recycling.
* Identify and organise resources to complete tasks with regard to process, cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
* Follow health and safety procedures and safe systems of work, including PPE and regulatory compliance.
* Comply with sustainability principles, segregating waste for recycling, reuse or disposal.
* Select, check store and maintain equipment and tools; restore the work area on completion of activity.
* Communicate in writing and record information — paper-based or electronic (e.g., job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents, manufacturers’ documentation, asset management records, worksheets, checklists, waste environmental records and legal reporting requirements).
* Collect, interpret and use data with information and digital technology; comply with GDPR and cyber security policies.
* Apply equity, diversity and inclusion policies and practices, and teamwork principles.
* Apply continuous improvement techniques and devise suggestions for improvement.
* Provide support and technical advice to technical and non-technical colleagues and other stakeholders; communicate work updates and information.
* Carry out and record learning and development activities.
* Comply with security procedures, including site access, document classification and securing assets.
Electrical, ICA, and Mechanical responsibilities
* Electrical: Install, commission and decommission cabling and electrical equipment.
* Electrical: Apply electrical theories and principles; repair and maintenance practices; modify electrical circuits.
* Electrical: Interrogate information on intelligent control equipment (PLC, HMIs, Intelligent Starters, VSDs); fault finding and rectification using diagnostic aids; use electrical drawings; install cable types and terminations; apply mathematical theory.
* ICA: Apply electrical theories and principles; install, commission and decommission ICA equipment; configure instrumentation and control devices; calibrate and monitor open/closed loop systems; fault finding and diagnostic equipment use; inspect and test ICA equipment; interpret design specifications, plans and drawings; calibrate ICA equipment; isolate equipment with permits and safe isolation policies; test telemetry signals and configure outstations; use software to program control systems; assess condition of equipment and propose actions; analyze data to make evidence-based changes; isolate equipment for maintenance with lock-off systems.
* ICA: Configure field instrumentation and communication devices; maintain and repair instrumentation, control equipment and cabling.
* Mechanical: Commission and decommission mechanical equipment; assemble, position and install components; disconnect and remove equipment; apply repair and maintenance techniques; use tools and resources for installation, repair and maintenance; isolate plant and equipment for maintenance with permits and safe isolation policies; depressurise systems where required; inspect and test mechanical systems; fault find and diagnose; interpret manufacturers’ instructions and drawings; apply basic fabrication, welding and cutting; perform bench fitting; operate machinery (e.g., lathes, pillar drills, milling machines, threading machines, mechanical saws); apply mechanical theories and mathematics; install and terminate cables; identify problems and determine solutions; interpret design specifications and plans.
* Work in line with water industry standards and regulatory requirements; plan maintenance with process safety and environmental considerations.
Qualifications and skills
* 5 GCSEs minimum or equivalent (grade A-C or 9-4).
* Maths, English and a science or technology subject (grade A-C or 9-4).
* Communication skills.
* Problem solving skills.
* Team working skills.
Details
* Wage: £20,000 per year.
* Start date: Wednesday 2 September 2026.
* Duration: 4 years.
* Hours: 37 hours per week; after apprenticeship, enrolment in a formal standby rota which may require some out-of-hours work.
