Job Purpose
The post holder will work as part of the Campus Security Team (CST) to provide a range of professional, flexible, and reliable in-house security, safety, and traffic management services to all staff, students, visitors, and university properties across the university portfolio. The role involves delivering a professional, customer-centric approach to enhancing the student experience.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Customer Service
* Deliver friendly, customer-centric, proactive security support to all users of the university property. Be visible, maintain a high profile with customers and staff, and take action to resolve security issues and enhance the support service.
* Promote a positive image of the University by maintaining a professional appearance, wearing protective clothing/workwear, and performing patrols, gatehouse monitoring, reception duties, and gate duties.
* Signpost and advise students, staff, or visitors to the correct support services, interacting with students in distress/crisis and supporting international students.
* Respond to fire alarms, building alarms, safe zone activations, and emergencies, providing first aid, evacuation support, and assisting staff or visitors with disabilities during evacuations.
* Maintain effective communication with colleagues regarding incidents, using radios or other tools.
* Follow training to monitor CCTV and other systems, support incident management, and ensure compliance with data protection regulations.
* Ensure adherence to university policies, legal, regulatory, health, and safety requirements.
* Respond to critical incidents and traffic management issues, escalating concerns as needed.
* Demonstrate teamwork, productivity, and high-quality service.
Daily Patrols and Event Support
o Monitor campus during day and night patrols on foot and vehicle, checking buildings and parking areas to prevent fire, flooding, accidents, and intrusion.
o Respond to Safe Zone alarms and monitor traffic flow to prevent obstructions and accidents.
o Support security during university events and graduations.
o Monitor behavior standards, reporting issues like substance abuse, violence, noise, theft, and nuisance.
H&S Compliance and Security
o Manage access gates, investigate unauthorized access, and complete incident reports.
o Support locking/unlocking premises, manage keys, alarms, and act as Fire Warden/Evacuation Chair when trained.
o Administer first aid as trained, liaise with security personnel and accommodation staff, and support contractor coordination.
o Assist in fault reporting and maintenance coordination.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
Knowledge /Qualifications
o Demonstrate competencies or hold Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 4 in English and Mathematics, with experience in a similar role.
o Understanding of security systems, CCTV, health and safety policies, and emergency procedures.
o Full UK driving license or working towards one.
o Experience in multicultural environments and interacting with diverse populations.
Skills
o Proactive, flexible, and enthusiastic approach.
o Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
o Self-motivated, good time management, team player, and ability to work independently.
o IT skills, including MS Office and Outlook.
o Customer care, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.
o Ability to conduct surveillance patrols and interact effectively with diverse communities.
Experience
o Experience in customer-focused security or facilities services.
o Knowledge of health and safety legislation.
Terms and Conditions
Salary: Grade 3, £21,900 - £22,681 per annum plus 25% shift allowance. Full-time, 35 hours/week, open-ended contract. Shift rotation: 6 on, 4 off, including early, back, and night shifts.
