CHoICE Facilities Services are seeking a passionate, hardworking and reliable individual to join our catering production team. The Central Assembly and Distribution Unit (CADU) at Sunderland Royal Hospital is looking to recruit a highly motivated Catering Assistant (Relief) to assist in the efficient and effective production & service of high‑quality meals & beverages, including cleaning and hygiene duties.
Shift pattern
24 hours per week on a rota basis between 6 am and 6 pm, Monday–Sunday.
Key responsibilities
 * Full compliance with Food Hygiene England, departmental Food Safety Policy, HACCP System and local policies.
 * Distribution, delivery and service of food to wards/departments.
 * Production and assembly of sandwiches, salads and meals.
 * Record food temperatures and food waste.
 * Undertake stock management, receipt and delivery, reporting any discrepancies or damaged goods to Supervisors.
 * Decanting heavy loads, portioning and packing large volumes of food in line with departmental procedures.
 * Ensure the unit is cleaned and maintained according to established cleaning schedules.
 * Operation of heavy‑duty industrial cleaning equipment.
 * Collection, segregation and disposal of waste materials in accordance with policies.
 * Additional duties may include working within the wider Production Unit or Patient Catering and working for long periods of time in freezer storage rooms at air temperatures below –18 °C.
 * Carry out any other duties deemed reasonable and in line with the banding of the post.
Essential skills and knowledge
 * Ability to accept and prioritise instructions.
 * Good understanding of catering services.
 * Combination of bending/lifting/standing and walking with frequent physical effort.
 * Basic numeracy and literacy education.
Desirable skills, knowledge and experience
 * Previous knowledge of catering environment.
 * Basic Food Hygiene Certificate.
 * Basic Allergen training.
 * Catering experience.
 * Experience of working in a healthcare environment.
 * Experience in production environment.
 * Experience of cash/card payment handling.
 * Previous experience in dealing with the public.
Job details
Salary: £26,101 per year pro‑rata for part‑time – 24 hours per week.
Contract: Permanent part‑time.
Location: Sunderland Royal Hospital, Kayll Road, Sunderland, SR4 7TP.
