Caretaker – University Technical College Hertsmere, Hertfordshire | Full-Time, Temporary Start Date: March 2026 Salary: £25,583 – £25,989 per annum An excellent opportunity has arisen for a reliable and practical Caretaker to join a forward-thinking University Technical College (UTC) in the Hertsmere area from February 2026. The role is central to the smooth day-to-day running of the college and plays a vital part in supporting students, staff and visitors. You’ll be working in a professional further education setting that values teamwork, responsibility and high standards. The role As Caretaker, your responsibilities will include: • Site Security & Safety • Opening and closing the site, setting alarms and securing buildings • Acting as a key holder and responding to alarm call-outs when required • Carrying out regular site and security checks • Supporting fire safety procedures, including drills and routine checks • Ensuring health & safety and safeguarding standards are consistently met Maintenance & Repairs • Completing routine maintenance and minor repairs • Carrying out basic DIY tasks such as painting, fixing furniture and replacing fittings • Monitoring site systems including heating, lighting and water • Liaising with contractors for larger repair works Cleaning, Facilities & Events • Supporting cleanliness and presentation of indoor and outdoor areas • Assisting with waste management and recycling • Setting up rooms for lessons, meetings, exams and events • Moving furniture and equipment as needed • Supporting occasional out-of-hours events and lettings Requirements: To be eligible for this role and the stated rate of pay, applicants must have: Previous experience in caretaking, maintenance, or facilities management A practical, organised approach with the ability to work independently A good understanding of health & safety procedures in a workplace or education setting Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team Flexibility to support occasional evening or weekend duties where required Availability to commit for the duration of the role Desirable (but not essential): Experience working within a school, college, or education environment Relevant training such as health & safety, manual handling, or site safety Salary dependent on experience and qualifications. Higher rates are reserved for candidates with substantial experience and/or relevant training.
