Senior Security Officer

TheNHS takes security very seriously. Patients and staff need to be kept safewhile in hospital, so access must be limited to people with a genuine reason tobe on hospital premises.

As a security officer, you will playa central role to help create a safe and secure environment for patients,visitors and staff across all our premises.

Security officers are based at ourFieldhead hospital site, but spend a lot of their time around the site, makingsure everything is safe and secure and talking to staff and patients.

Security staff need to outgoing toensure that we create a security awareness with NHS colleagues and patients,while patrolling the grounds and car parks.

We require a level of experience andtraining in security or customer service, particularly dealing with challengingsituations. SWYPFT requires relevant training and the basic training we arelooking for are Security Industry Authority (SIA) Door Supervisor- or SecurityOfficer Licence.

We expect a good standard of numeracyand literacy and require a GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and maths. We alsorequire a driving licence for this role.

When you join the NHS in a securityrole, you will have an introduction to the hospital site, the departments andtheir systems and procedures. You will be expected to keep your skills andknowledge up to date by going on short courses on particular topics, such asconflict resolution or physical intervention.


Main duties of the job

As a security officer, you will play a central role to help create a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors and staff across all our premises by:

* making sure visitors have a reason to be in the hospital
* ask official visitors to sign in and issue them with a pass
* deal with any incidents which might threaten the security of staff and patients
* where possible, diffuse potentially difficult situations
* liaise with police or other emergency services if required
* monitor review CCTV
* vigilantly patrol the outside of the hospital including the grounds
* advise managers and clinical staff on security issues

The right person for the Security Officer role need to be:

* experienced in public sector security
* able to understand a situation quickly
* calm in stressful situations
* confident and reassuring
* resilient in dealing with other peoples challenging behaviour
* able to follow procedures
* able to work alone or in a team
* prepared to go into unknown or unpredictable situations
* physically fit for walking and standing

Atthe time of advertising, this role does not meet the minimum requirements setby UK Visas and Immigration to sponsor candidates to work in the UK. Job responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

The personalsafety at all times of the patients, staff and visitors. The protection ofproperty against fraud, theft and criminal damage, to ensure the smoothuninterrupted delivery of health care.

JOBSUMMARY

TheSenior Security Officer will undertake, under own initiative, a fullrange of security duties to help prevent, deter and detect crime to protect allTrust property.

MAIN DUTES ANDRESPONSIBILITES

PROFESSIONAL

1. Responsiblefor the supervision of internal security staffand external contractors.

2. Externalpatrol of all properties as directed to detect and prevent intruder damage.

3. Patrolof grounds and building to prevent damage by fire, flood and theft.

4. Undertakeofficial driving duties as required.

5. To operate trust vehicles in a reasonable manner, complyingwith all current road traffic regulations

6. Checkwindow and doors on vulnerable property and the securing of same as required.

7. Dealwith disturbances and the escorting of unauthorised person off the premises.

8. Providea Ward/Department presence in situations where patients and/or visitors arebeing or potentially being violent or aggressive.

9. Carryout investigations when required of any loss or breaches of security andundertake any other follow-up enquiries as necessary.

10. Assistat the scene of road traffic accident within hospital grounds and at the sceneof major incidents.

11. Providean escort when requested for staff in vulnerable locations.

12. Assistin transferring resuscitation equipment within the hospital in an emergency andother transport duties when required.

13. Providesecurity assistance as required in accordance with Emergency Response Procedure, Missing Patient Policy and EmergencyPlanning Policy.

14. Dealwith all aspects of car parking related issues including complaints.

15. Supervisecar parks and support drivers with provision of information in relationavailable spaces within car parks.

16. Tobe fully conversant with all operational aspects of CCTV systems in relation tothe recording and storage of images.

17. Tobe fully conversant in the Trust Policy regarding data protection andinformation governance, especially in relation to recorded data on securitysystems.

18. Assistat scenes of fire alarms in accordance with Trust policy.

19. Actas hospital key holder and respond to issue requests as necessary.

120. Trainand support new security officers to settle into their new role to ensure aproductive security service.

COMMUNICATION

1. Toliaise on a daily basis with security management on daily activities andupdates.

2. Toreport incidents on burglaries, criminal damage, intruder complaints and allother reportable crime.

3. Reportincidents, in writing, in line with Trust Incident Reporting Procedure and maintainauthorised records relating to duties.

4. Utilisationof computerised systems in relation to car parking and security.

5. Liaisewith outside agencies including requesting police assistance when required.

6. Reviewpractical aspects of security and acquaint the Security Management with anyassociated problem.

7. Encouragestaff to develop an awareness in crime prevention and the protection ofhospital property.

8. Communicatingwith the victims of violence, de-escalating of violent incidents, and calmingof violent/distressed people.

9.Promotea Pro-security environment to create a safe and secure environment on all Trustpremises.

10.Toensure all work is carried out in a risk free manner and to liaise with theSecurity Manager to find solutions to the identified risks

11.ToAdvise the Security Manager of any out of hours complaints regarding securityand car parking issues.

12.Toinvestigate complaints when requested by the Security Manager and report allfindings

RESOURCESAND FINANCE

1. Performall Trust banking requirements as per Financial Standing Instructions.

2. Ensuresecurity of all Trust cash movement/collections.

3. Ensurethe safe custody of all lost/found property.

TRAININGAND EDUCATION

1. Supportthe Security Manager to induct and assist in the training of all new startersparticularly out of normal working hours.

2. Havehealth, safety and welfare of self and others and to comply at all times withthe requirements of the Health and Safety Regulations and the Working TimeDirective.

3. Applycontrol and restraint techniques as per the approved care and responsibilitycriteria.

MANAGEMENT/LEADERSHIPPEOPLE/SELF

1. Tosupervise staff and contractors, ensuring fair allocation of work, customersatisfaction is maintained and developed.

2. Toimplement Trust policies and guidelines to staff.

3. Undertakeduties of a lower grade as appropriate.

4. Therequirement to accurately hand over their period of duty to their colleagues tomaintain continuity of service.

5. Towork with minimum supervision and where required by rota commitment to workalone.

PATIENTCONTACT

1. Deal with both in-patients andout-patients, on a face-to-face basis, in circumstances involvingviolent/aggressive behaviour.

2. Receivecomplaints of crime from patients.

MISCELLANEOUS

1. To reportaccidents/incidents immediately and in accordance with Trust policy.

2. To be courteous and polite at all timesto service users and provide a friendly efficient service.

3. To work closely with Ward Managers andwork along side patients and have an understanding of their needs whilstcarrying out duties.

4. Establish good working relationships withall points of contact with facilities users, ensuring they are kept informedabout the progress of work as required.

7. To takereasonable precautions when handling Trust property.

8. The postholder may be required to carryout duties which are of lesser skill nature than the post for which he/she isemployed.

9. The postholder will be expected to workat any properties throughout the Trust as instructed by the Security Manager.

10. The postholder will on occasions berequired to work overtime/change working hours if the need of service dictates.

11. All Trust employees are expected tomaintain existing skills and develop/receive training in new skills as requiredto carry out work of the Trust.

12. To ensure the appropriate use of safety andprotective clothing and equipment, as required by good working practice and theHealth and Safety at Work Act.

13. To read understand and apply safetyguidance notes, hazard letters, fire instructions and other such documents asissued to the postholder by Security Manager.

14. It is the responsibility of all Trustemployees to ensure that all duties are carried out in accordance with bestpractice Risk Management.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Numerate and literate to GCSE.
* SIA Qualified or equivalent.
* SIA CCTV Licence.


Physical Attributes

* Ability to undertake the duties and demands of the post.
* A satisfactory sickness record over the previous 2 years (subject to the need to act with fairness and equality of opportunity, particularly where the sickness is related to a disability and/or pregnancy).
* Moving & Handling Bending, Twisting Carrying.
* Smart appearance pleasant and helpful manner.


Special Knowledge/Skills

* The ability to produce clear and concise reports.
* Able to follow written and oral instructions.
* Ability to work with minimum supervision.
* Ability to deal/communicate with members of the public in a composed and professional manner.
* Basic Computer Skills.


Personal Attributes

* Able to communicate effectively with staff and the general public.
* No police convictions or cautions.
* A current driving licence and access to a car during the working day is essential (reasonable adjustments will be considered for any applicants who are unable to drive due to a disability).


Experience

* Previous experience within the NHS security sector or equivalent in Government sector or retail Environment.
* Liaising with external organisations i.e. Police, external security firms/contractors.
* Previous employment within the security industry.
* Previous supervisory experience.


Training

* Must undertake Reducing Restrictive Physical Interventions training
* (Management of Aggression and Violence) to approved Trust standard.
